How often do you shop for food?

It feels like I never have enough fruit and vegetables / salad in stock. I'm wondering if it's my expectations that are off kilter...

I tend to do 1-2 big (car) shops in a month, max. This usually includes some fruit and veg but as it's Lidl the quality isn't great. I go to the local supermarket (on foot with a trolley, better quality) maybe once a week, less if I can get away with it. I stock up on fruit / veg / salad then. We also have great local markets, but I'm struggling to get to them TBH. I confess I'm really resenting the time and effort it takes to keep fresh produce in the house.

My mum used to do one shop a week and as we lived rurally that was it. TBH we didn't eat much fruit / veg as my mum didn't like them - bananas, carrots, potatoes were about the sum total. I love veg and salad but I'm finding it harder and harder to motivate myself to shop, prepare and cook them.

I'm being really lazy aren't I? It's normal to shop at least 2-3 times a week for fresh produce isn't it? I've recently increased my hours at work and as I'm cycling I no longer pass the grocers that I used to drop into every few days, so I have to make an extra effort.

Once a week. Can occasionally stretch to once a fortnight as long as we do a top up for milk/breakfast things in between. Couldn’t cope with multiple times a week, I hate food shopping.

SweatyBetty20 · 11/07/2021 11:16

I live on my own so do a shop once a fortnight. Things that have helped me

  • frozen peas and beans
  • I freeze bags of chopped celery, carrot and leek together and use for casseroles/stews/soups
  • tinned fruit and ice cream is good
  • frozen berries for crumbles

I also had to buy a new fridge freezer after my 20 year old one died - the veg drawer in that keeps things so much fresher.

Shop once a week, but tend to grab bananas and apples mid week and ds and dh eat them like they're going out of fashion... but if I buy loads, they don't get eaten?

Mum used to do fortnightly and things seemed to stay fresher longer...

Depends on your diet

LOADS of fruit and veg here consumed daily.

So one big shop and then 2/3 time small shops

One adult two primary

MrsMaizel · 11/07/2021 11:20

Get it delivered and life is so much easier.

Comedycook · 11/07/2021 11:21

One large shop once a week...usually about £80
One medium top up...usually another £30-40

I have tried to cut it down to once a week but I always end up needing more.

Due to covid and dh wfh and kids home isolating, we get through huge amounts

My issue!

But benefits are huge

Challengerice · 11/07/2021 11:24

That’s weekly

WeAllHaveWings · 11/07/2021 11:26

Tesco delivery twice a week (use delivery saver).

NuffSaidSam · 11/07/2021 11:26

There are 7 of us here. Once a week is enough. Just buy enough in the one shop! Fruit and veg will keep for a week. We do tend to run out of bananas mid-week, but otherwise fine. You don't need to go 2/3 times a week.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 11/07/2021 11:26

1 big shop on Saturday plus 1 or 2 small shops during the week.

the small shops look like other people's weekly shop because it's the 9 of us, including 4 ravenous teenagers!

letitgogogo · 11/07/2021 11:29

How much do you roughly spend? I pay for Tesco deliveries, it's 7.99 and month and i can order as many times as i like, there's an extra charge if it's under £40 so I normally get 2 deliveries a week just over £40.

claralara42 · 11/07/2021 11:34

I don't understand how people can shop once a fortnight or once a week even...fresh produce just doesn't last that long. How do you have fruit or veg after a few days?
I pop into one shop or another pretty much every day, or one of us does anyway/ Fresh food needs constant replenishment.

Youdiditanyway · 11/07/2021 11:35

Once a week. Sometimes we pop in during the week if we’ve forgotten to get something or run out of something but not as often as we did pre-pandemic. During the first lockdown we managed to get by with fortnightly shops but it was utterly grim, lots of frozen and tinned fruit and veg.

NuffSaidSam · 11/07/2021 11:36

'I don't understand how people can shop once a fortnight or once a week even...fresh produce just doesn't last that long.'

Yes it does. Maybe you're not storing it correctly?

Youdiditanyway · 11/07/2021 11:36

fresh produce just doesn't last that long

Disagree. Perhaps depends on the supermarket or on the product but most fruit and veg lasts us a week, berries tend to go off first but fruit like apples, pears and bananas last ages.

workwoes123 · 11/07/2021 11:36

I'm not in the UK. Food is expensive where we are, which is why I'm shopping at Lidl. But I really really don't want to have to do a weekly big shop there, twice a month is grim enough. And their fruit / veg leaves a lot to be desired.

Feel like I'm never out of the shop since I have cut out highly processed foods! Constantly buying fruit and salad

This is probably part of it.. I'm trying to have a healthy, cook-from-scratch, no-processed-foods eating plan on a convenience food shopping regime!

There are 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 (ravenous) preteen / teenage boys. And yes we're all eating at home a lot more since Covid.

Once a week, but plan for some veg/salad not lasting a week, so aubergine/mushrooms/berries get used first, leaving things like iceberg lettuce, apples, carrots, peppers plus frozen veg for later in the week. Can always find my 5 a day, but it does take a bit of thinking about

It doesn't last 2 weeks, and soft fruit doesn't last a week. Bananas don't last a week in the summer, unless you are eating them black.
AlwaysLatte · 11/07/2021 11:40

I have one big shop delivered every week then I pick up any extras when I do my mum's weekly shopping (eg milk as we get through about 30 pints a week).

Feckinlego · 11/07/2021 11:42

What about sticking to your fortnightly shopping but getting a veg box delivery a couple of times a week?
