How often do you shop for food?

It feels like I never have enough fruit and vegetables / salad in stock. I'm wondering if it's my expectations that are off kilter...

I tend to do 1-2 big (car) shops in a month, max. This usually includes some fruit and veg but as it's Lidl the quality isn't great. I go to the local supermarket (on foot with a trolley, better quality) maybe once a week, less if I can get away with it. I stock up on fruit / veg / salad then. We also have great local markets, but I'm struggling to get to them TBH. I confess I'm really resenting the time and effort it takes to keep fresh produce in the house.

My mum used to do one shop a week and as we lived rurally that was it. TBH we didn't eat much fruit / veg as my mum didn't like them - bananas, carrots, potatoes were about the sum total. I love veg and salad but I'm finding it harder and harder to motivate myself to shop, prepare and cook them.

I'm being really lazy aren't I? It's normal to shop at least 2-3 times a week for fresh produce isn't it? I've recently increased my hours at work and as I'm cycling I no longer pass the grocers that I used to drop into every few days, so I have to make an extra effort.

3 times a week.
Thursday Aldi and green grocers
Friday bits from any other shop e.g refill shop
Monday spend about £10 buying stuff from Aldi & green grocers again to tide us over until Thursday.
Dh does a big monthly Sainsbury's trip too.

I’m feeding 5 people, one adult, one 18 year old and 3 children between 12-6.
I do one big shop a week for about £65 for school snacks, breakfast bits, hypo snacks which is normally small cartons of juice and oat cakes, tea coffee, fruit &veg &cleaning stuff. One food delivery box from gusto and a trip to shops to top up fruits and milk at some point over the week.
Total spend is probably £150 every week. I have a diabetic child and two children on special diets due to allergies so my food shop is a bit spendy I think. Also have to say since my ex has left food lasts much longer!

Weekly. We do one trip to the farmers market for veg and another to Aldi. We don't do any top-up shops.

How are you storing your fresh fruit and vegetables? We started a CSA veg box 3 years ago and I've learned a lot about how to keep produce fresh. This is a good chart:

I shop every day.

Every single blithering day Grin. We are hopeless at menu planning and using the freezer efficiently, but we like to eat well. So I can't have a meal without a vital ingredient missing. I honestly can't think of a day in the past 20 years when one or other of us hasn't had to go in to a food shop. Luckily we live in London with loads of choices surrounding us. I can't imagine living somewhere where you shop for the week/month and then that's that.

Gothichouse40 · 11/07/2021 17:20

I do one big shop once per month and then top-up shop at M&S and Scotmid. They are my nearest small shops.

I get an Asda delivery on a Tuesday, on Monday while dd does netball I almost always have to nip to the supermarket to get something for tea! We also get an Oddbox every other week with a random selection of veg. Every Sunday I chuck everything that is left in the fridge into a veg soup.

Most of the fruit gets eaten in pack lunches Wed-Fri and I don't replace it, I agree it won't last a week even in the fridge.

@kowari

I eat 7 to 10 fruit and veg a day and we eat very little ultra processed food. Weekly still isn't a problem for fruit and veg. Forgot to add, bread is from the bakery, a 'too good to go' bag every two to three weeks (slice and freeze most of it).
How many in family?

Same quantity here, minimum. X 3.
I have to buy a few times a week because mainly where do you store it?

Thank you

The only thing i would disagree with is oranges…. So nice chilled from fridge

Havehope21 · 11/07/2021 17:43

Hi OP - not all 'processed' foods are bad for you though... in fact, a lot of the 'processing' makes food safe to eat. Things like canned tuna in water is healthy and can be made into lots of nutritious meals.

Also, lots of frozen fruits and vegetables are actually more nutritious than fresh because they have maintained the nutrients. We buy frozen mango and peaches... frozen veggies don't have the same texture (e.g. frozen broccoli can be quite watery), but if you are looking at the nutrition benefits, don't be put off my frozen.

Fruit and veg takes up half of the fridge. Milk in the door. Berries in freezer. More fruit in fruit bowl (including tomatoes and avocados), bananas on counter or in freezer for smoothies, pineapple on counter until cut up. Root veg in a box in the cupboard. Lentils and tinned beans, chickpeas, tomatoes in cupboard.

We have A&C every Monday, if we are only having one other delivery that week ( normally Thurs) that is around £35-40, otherwise about £20. We alt cheese and cooked meat one week with fresh chicken & meats the next.

Supermarket shop 3 weeks a month Ocado, £50-70 a week. Every 4 weeks a Tesco of around £45, half of that is a month's worth of par baked bread & rolls as they are the only UK supplier of the brand we have.

In total we normally spend no more than £90-£100 a week. We always have full freezers ( we have 2) and look to take advantage of any bulk buys or discounts, Ocado flash sales etc.

MrsChuckBass · 12/07/2021 05:07

Me and two primary DCs both on packed lunch
I do one big shop a week, usually £80-£100 then one top up of fresh stuff and more packed lunch bits usually £20-£30.
We usually have a pub tea over the road once a week as well Grin and that's about £25-£30 a time

LavendulaAngustifolia · 12/07/2021 09:26

Once a fortnight for store cupboard and freezer stuff from the supermarket in the next town and then fresh veg and some meats from the butchers in the local village every 4-5 days.
