How often do you shop for food?

It feels like I never have enough fruit and vegetables / salad in stock. I'm wondering if it's my expectations that are off kilter...

I tend to do 1-2 big (car) shops in a month, max. This usually includes some fruit and veg but as it's Lidl the quality isn't great. I go to the local supermarket (on foot with a trolley, better quality) maybe once a week, less if I can get away with it. I stock up on fruit / veg / salad then. We also have great local markets, but I'm struggling to get to them TBH. I confess I'm really resenting the time and effort it takes to keep fresh produce in the house.

My mum used to do one shop a week and as we lived rurally that was it. TBH we didn't eat much fruit / veg as my mum didn't like them - bananas, carrots, potatoes were about the sum total. I love veg and salad but I'm finding it harder and harder to motivate myself to shop, prepare and cook them.

I'm being really lazy aren't I? It's normal to shop at least 2-3 times a week for fresh produce isn't it? I've recently increased my hours at work and as I'm cycling I no longer pass the grocers that I used to drop into every few days, so I have to make an extra effort.

I shop twice a week - mostly because we eat a lot of fresh food. But it won't be a full trolley load, it'll literally just be the fresh bits we need until the next shop. Then perhaps once a month I'll do a huge freezer/cupboard shop. Work well for us.

Twice a week. Its what we have room for in the fridge.

daisyducky · 11/07/2021 11:48

Twice a week. Tesco delivery once a week, then a top up shop for fresh fruit, veg, milk and weekend treats from M&S.

Fruit and veg don't stay fresh long as our house can be quite warm. Plus the kids drink so much milk we'd have no room for anything else if we bought much more!

I do mine weekly. We buy fresh fruit and salad, enough to last a few days, and also batch cook and freeze 2 or 3 meals. If we run out of fresh veg towards the end of the week, we go to the bag of frozen veg which lives in the freezer.
If we overdo it on the fresh stuff and it looks like it's on the turn, it gets turned into soup.
I get it wrong occasionally and nip out, but try really hard not to.
Only two adults here though, and not fussy feeders, which helps.

Once a week for a family of four but I go to the greengrocer a couple of times a week for fruit and salad

Bagelsandbrie · 11/07/2021 11:57

I go far too many times Blush usually do a big shop once a week and then pop into Tesco most days buying fresh bread, fruit, salad, snacks. It’s awful really. I keep trying to change but I just love really fresh bread - that’s the main thing for me and then when I’m in there I crack under the pressure of seeing other stuff I fancy.

Moonface123 · 11/07/2021 11:58

Literally every day, but big and small shops, l work in a supermarket so just whizz around after my shift. I have two strapping teenage sons who take theit workouts and diet seriously, I am really thankful for my staff discount.

dudsville · 11/07/2021 12:00

I wonder if the shop would be less onerous if you did it weekly. You'd always have fresh fruit and veg and you wouldn't have to get so much in one go. Much like cleaning house; if you do it monthly then it's a massive chore but if you clean weekly and tidy as you go along then it's less hard.

Planttrees · 11/07/2021 12:00

I shop online once a week.

There is a small Co-op near us and my nextdoor neighbour shops every morning, six days a week. There used to be a greengrocer and butcher in the high street but unfortunately they are now gone. She is very elderly but I think the regular exercise of walking to the shop and back daily to buy enough for the day for her and her husband is really good for her. She also treats it a social occasion to stop and chat to neighbours and friends. Its a way of life that is disappearing unfortunately as everyone drives to souless supermarkets or shops online.

Moonface123 · 11/07/2021 12:01

I also have a menagerie of animals to feed, and get through lots shower gel and wash powder/ detergent because teenagers forever showering and changing their clothes. ( but better than being smelly !! )

Imapotato · 11/07/2021 12:03

Once a week at Aldi, but usually have to pop into the Asda down the road at least once per week for things I have forgotten/run out of.

Kinsters · 11/07/2021 12:03

Twice a week. We go through a lot of milk and our fridge is small.

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 11/07/2021 12:08

Usually three times a week. A ‘big’ shop at the weekend and then two smaller through the week. We eat a lot of fresh veg, fruit, salad and fish and they’re not things that keep for more than a few days.

Friolero · 11/07/2021 12:09

We have a big delivery once a week (for 5 of us), but sometimes need to do a top-up shop of bread and milk.

QueenLagertha · 11/07/2021 12:10

@Bagelsandbrie you need a bread maker. Have had mine a couple of months now. Bread is amazing and I haven't bought shop bought bread since

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 11/07/2021 12:16

@Planttrees my late grandmother walked a mile to her village 6 mornings a week, right up to the day she fell in the high street aged 88, and sadly went to a nursing home straight from the hospital. Never made it home, bless her! She was a fantastic lady, born well over 100 years ago now.
I think apart from her family, those daily trips to those independent shops were her social life (that and chatting to her neighbours over the garden fence) She was still getting shopping for a couple of 'old people' in her road up until the last ❤

lollypoppi · 11/07/2021 12:16

2 adults, 1 pre schooler and a toddler.

I do a big shop once a week. I always run out of milk, bread and maybe some fruit, fresh items and I'll run in with a basket to Morrison's or even just pick up from local newsagent type shop. I live 5mins walk from Morrison's though so it's very handy. Before I lived here though I still did one shop at Morrison's. Never usually had to pick anything else up before having kids, maybe sometimes bread.

WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow · 11/07/2021 12:35

@Skybluepinkgiraffe My granny was the very same, in fact even down to having a fall in the high street sadly. She was 95 at the time!

There’s definitely a social aspect to it for older people which is lovely I think. My dsis works in a shop on a street with independent butchers, chemist, fruit & veg place etc and loves her old ladies as she calls them. For some of them that chat with the staff they know and the other regulars is the only interaction they have and it makes their day Smile. They’ll never switch to the big supermarkets.

I’ve been lucky to be able to work from home through the pandemic which has allowed me more time to shop locally eg I can walk to the fish monger/veg shop at lunch time which I could never do before. The big supermarkets are definitely here to stay but maybe the increase in wfh will enable some to move towards buying more from local independent places so that hopefully the social aspect of shopping locally doesn’t completely disappear.

shivawn · 11/07/2021 12:37

Every Monday, I find a lot of stuff comes in fresh that day to my local supermarket. No problem making fresh produce last, apples and oranges easily last a week. Even grapes are usually okay that long if kept in the fridge. Berries need to be eaten during the first few days.

Kazzyhoward · 11/07/2021 12:39

Once a week. We eat meals with fresh fruit/veg/meat for the first 4/5/6 days after the shop and then switch to frozen/processed etc for the last couple of days before the next weekly shop if there's no fresh stuff left in the kitchen.

kowari · 11/07/2021 12:41

I do a weekly shop at Aldi, then Tesco about once a week for one or two things DS eats that Aldi don't stock. Milk from the local dairy once a week. We eat fruit and veg that won't last the week at the beginning of the shopping week, longer lasting fruit and veg at the end.

PattyPan · 11/07/2021 12:41

I shop once a week (delivery) and I’m vegan so fruit & veg is a large percentage of my diet. I don’t have problems with stuff going off in that time. I eat berries earlier in the week and more durable fruit later in the week and heads of lettuce last fine for the week (unlike bagged lettuce).

Studiodoll · 11/07/2021 12:41

I do one big shop in Aldi on a Saturday. I would top up most days in our local Tesco, lidl etc for bread, milk and fruit. We are a family of five, two adults and 3 children aged 9,11 and 13. My Mam shopped once a week on a Thursday and when it was gone it was gone, no top ups.

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 11/07/2021 12:42

Awww @WhatsMyNameGonnaBeNow our lovely grannies 💞 Your post made me smile.
I'd love to support local businesses more.
I'm going to think about how 🤔

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 11/07/2021 12:44

And if you're going to have a fall, where better than out in public rather than be down overnight and unable to call for help
