If you were alive the last time a men's England football team were in a final

What did your family do? Did you watch the game, or something else? I was three at the time, my mum and late dad have no interest in football, other children came later. I've been told that the three of us went on a river trip on the day, as mum thought correctly it would be quiet and it was.

I was 5 in 1966. No idea - I don't think it was necessarily a big national event with so much hype then. No big screen TVs in pubs, for sure. The only memory I have is that to spawned some sort of playground chanting and my feeling is that a lot of it was specifically related to the fact that it was against Germany.

TheQueef · 11/07/2021 09:29

My DDad went to Wembly with Uncle Alan in the Hillman minx.
I could give you a minute by minute account of what happened to the minx (nice hearing the story again for the thousandth time Grin)
Can only remember the rows it caused, not the match!

Evenstar · 11/07/2021 09:30

I was only 2 so no actual memory of it, my mum spoke of it over the years and was always very interested in the team members, they were very much celebrities that she admired and she seemed to feel fond of them and admire them. My dad really wasn’t into sport so never mentioned it.

I was 8 and lived in Wales, I remember nothing at all about it.

Clawdy · 11/07/2021 09:58

Watched it at boyfriend's house with him and his three older brothers. The atmosphere was amazing, though I wasn't a football fan! When Bobby Charlton wiped away a tear at the presentation, the four boys all got choked with emotion!

Crankley · 11/07/2021 10:17

I was in my early 20s and lived in Germany in 1966 when England beat Germany in the World Cup. I watched it on tv with about 15 Germans - that was fun Grin

Oldraver · 11/07/2021 10:19

I was a year old and I assume my Mum was am desperately trying to get away from living with her MIL

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/07/2021 10:20

i ws 8 months old
never discussed.
dh was at a wedding, and as a teenager, escaped the wedding to watch the match!
i have heard this story many, many times

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/07/2021 10:23

I was 6 weeks old Grin
Mum used to say if you left the room they scored a goal ( not sure if she meant they scored so many ,so you had "proper" football not like the 0:0 draws , or she was unluckly and missed them ?)

FinallyHere · 11/07/2021 10:43

Ooohh, thank you for asking, loved peoples stories, honestly I've wanted to talk about this.

I was six, my family were living in Germany. My bedroom window looked out over a cul de sac which usually had lots of children playing out.

That afternoon there was a hush over the whole neighbourhood. I have no idea whether that was anything to do with the Union flag my father hung from the window. I also have no idea where the flag came from, don't remember ever seeing it either before or since.

Endless repeats of 'that' goal on TV, demonstrating how it wasn't valid.

starfishmummy · 11/07/2021 10:43

I was a kid. Tbh I know I watched it as it was such a big thing - but I dont have much recollection of it or of it being a big family event.

I remember the lead up with the theft and recovery of the trophy and then there was the mascot World Cup Willie and the issue of special postage stamps - and then afterwards the release of one of the stamls with "England Winners" (yes I was a stamp collector back then!!)

Madcats · 11/07/2021 11:38

I was 1 and I don't think we (or anybody else we were friends with) owned a television. The one we did get used to have bad weather interference for much of the summer, so we'd have been watching through a haze of French TV!

I suppose it was on the news on the radio and I expect there were some photos in the paper the next day.

Oh we had a Hillman Minx at some point. Unlike every other car we had it was always referred to as "the Minx", not "the car" (it wasn't as if we had two cars).
ahoyshipmates · 11/07/2021 11:57

I was 4. Don't remember a thing.

Giggorata · 11/07/2021 12:05

There was a bit of a thing about it at school, and we made things in crafts with flags and slogans and whatnot.
We and various nearby families had German students at the time and they considerately went round to the one house to watch the match, leaving us to watch it and get excited. I was bored by the match, but remember the bit at the end.
We weren't too triumphal about it, to save the feelings of our lovely students.

drum123 · 11/07/2021 12:05

I was 11. I remember my Dad pacing the room, sitting down for a couple of seconds, then up again. He ended up falling off the sideboard when England got their third goal! The match was on ITV yesterday, in colour (that's clever technology I don't understand). It was really exciting to watch it. Interesting that the players all tried the same tricks as they do now (diving in the penalty box etc.) but didn't argue with the ref for more than a couple of seconds.

newnortherner111 · 11/07/2021 12:39

For those of you who had a Hillman Minx, did the seat smell seem overpowering on a warm day, such that you had to have the car doors open for a minute or two before setting off?

I remember my grandma sending me to the kiosk on the bus station to buy her some more humbugs; there wasn't a soul about, apart from the woman serving and me, a reluctant humbug-buyer. I can't remember if my dad was watching the match though.

Twoforthree · 11/07/2021 12:45

I was in my mummy’s tummy. I think it was all black and there was a drumming sound continuously.

drudgewithagrudge · 11/07/2021 12:46

I was 18. I listened to the final in 1966 on a very small transistor radio sitting on the west cliff at Bournemouth. I was more worried about my A level results coming out soon.

Still wonder where said boyfriend is now.

Samcro · 11/07/2021 12:49

I was 5 so no idea lol
did have a crush on Bobby Moore when I was older though.

TheQueef · 11/07/2021 12:51

Ours stank of either, Very wet dog or Hot Very wet dog.
It was vomit worthy on the cooler days but hot days were special.
It's still "The best car he ever had" and given it's full title here too Madcats never just a car.
He kept it for years, cost him loads all the time, was on jacks more than the road.
Plus my Mum used to snag her tights getting in and row him.

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2021 12:54

I was two years old and have no memory of it at all. I doubt my parents watched it, they've no interest in football at all. It was all about cricket with them.

SophieJo · 11/07/2021 13:07

I was 11 and remember the build up and excitement when we won. Still have a programme. I also remember Nobby Stiles and his false teeth!

AuntieStella · 11/07/2021 13:17

I don't really remember

I remember all the joy of winning the World Cup, but don't remember if I watched it on the day. I must ask!
