If you were alive the last time a men's England football team were in a final

What did your family do? Did you watch the game, or something else? I was three at the time, my mum and late dad have no interest in football, other children came later. I've been told that the three of us went on a river trip on the day, as mum thought correctly it would be quiet and it was.

I was a child too. We were on a seaside holiday on the south coast. My father had zero interest in football. My mother said that on the day of the cup final, my father was the only male over the age of 8 on the beach :)

pussycatlickinglollyices · 11/07/2021 13:36

DH was 4 in '66 and doesn't remember any of it, but he does remember the moon landings when he was 7.

Is a Hillman Minx the predecessor to the Austin Allegro, or the British Leyland Princess?

NannyGythaOgg · 11/07/2021 13:40

I was 11 and I can still recognise and name more of the team then than I can of todays team - although I am getting better at today's lads and could probably recognise 3 or 4 now - and can name Kane on sight.

@drum 123 colour tv was invented before then but little if anything was transmitted that way in the UK as very few people had colour enabled tv and were very expensive.

I was born too late, but about a year ago my dad casually mentioned that he was at Wembley for the 1966 final. They had some sort of prize draw at work and he won a ticket. I still can't believe I got to the age of 50 before he thought to mention that he was there!

Evenstar · 11/07/2021 13:51

@pussycatlickinglollyices I remember the moon landings, I would have been almost 4, my mum insisted we should be allowed to see it as it was an historic occasion, my brother was only 2 so no memory of it.

Greydog · 11/07/2021 13:53

I was 13, and on holiday. Someone mentioned that England had won - we just said "oh". Didn't care then, care less now. I used to go to a lot of
football matches, and with a couple of exceptions, saw most of the players with their own teams. I loved Greavsie and Peters!

Babdoc · 11/07/2021 13:55

I was 10, and on holiday in Cornwall. We came off the beach to watch the match on the tiny (black and white, of course) tv in the holiday cottage, struggling to see through the interference and poor reception on the set. Well worth giving up a couple of hours sunbathing for!

Buggerthebotox · 11/07/2021 13:56

I was 7, just in junior school. I can't remember the game, but we talked about it in school and collected cards. I remember being teased at collecting the Nobby Stiles one. We used to joke about him for some reason (the lack of teeth, probably).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/07/2021 14:13

I was 1.

My grandad helped prepare the pitch at Goodison. My dad and a couple of his siblings helped out, ran errands round the stadium, met Pele and Garrincha amongst others.

speedymum1968 · 11/07/2021 14:19

I was probably propped up with a bottle in my mouth ( much like half the country tonight ) but in my defence I was only 11 months at the time

Seymour5 · 11/07/2021 14:27

I was 19, and still lived in Scotland. I remember the players and the positive feelings. Bobby Moore was a household name and seemed popular everywhere. I don't remember half as much anti English rhetoric as I'm hearing now. Sad

Chardonnay73 · 11/07/2021 14:28

My grandpa (ex England footballer) my nana and my mum were all on holiday in Majorca.
My Grandpa was glued to it in the tv room, a tiny smoke filled place. Nana and mum couldn’t watch it ( nerves) and went to get their hair done in the hotel salon. There’s pictures of them at the gala dinner the hotel put on that evening with MASSIVE bouffant beehives!!
We had Hillman Imp in the 70’s. It smelt of the plastic seats constantly, which were unbearable to sit on on a hot day!

DialSquare · 11/07/2021 14:32

I was born 3 years later but my Dad had a World Cup season ticket and went to all the games at Wembley. He said this week that this team is the closest we've had to the 66 team. He said you can see the team spirit throughout the squad.

ginghamtablecloths · 11/07/2021 14:39

I was 11 and I think we as a family gathered round the black and white telly to watch it with a fair amount of excitement. I don't recall watching any of the other matches in the build up to it or the hype from the media which is so present this time.

I recall seeing the hat-trick from Geoff Hurst which as yet, is the only one at a World Cup final, Bobby Moore holding the trophy aloft and Nobby Stiles' big gummy smile.

I remember the commentator (Frank Wolstenholme) saying at the end, "There are some people on the pitch, they think it's all over - it is now." It seemed such a clever thing to say off the cuff and of course it has gone down in history. Even though I'm not a big football fan these days that particular quote always makes me smile.

UseOfWeapons · 11/07/2021 15:01

I was 2 months old, and we didn’t have a telly.

480Widdio · 11/07/2021 15:06

I was a Student Nurse in London in 1966.Watched it on the ward TV,I had no interest in football in those days.

There was none of the horrendous behaviour there is nowadays after it.It saddens me to see how much this Country has deteriorated over the years.

Empra123 · 11/07/2021 16:23

I was a year old so don't remember it. But family legend has it mum and my grandmother took me to get my first pair of shoes so dad could watch the football in peace.

My parents got our first colour telly in 1973 in time for Princess Anne's wedding. We were the first in our bit of the street and several of the neighbours came round to watch

We had ours for the 1972 Olympics.

I was 9 in 1966 and I seem to remember collecting special coins that might have come from the petrol station. We had a t.v. and my mother was sports mad so I imagine it was on, but I can’t remember the match although I can remember the sense of euphoria.

Likewise - ours was from Radio Rentals, not bought.
Maggiesgirl · 11/07/2021 20:16

I was 5, but we were living in Singapore, as Dad was RAF, I expect he went to the Mess to listen to it on the wireless.

Mum would have been in bed as she had 5 under 8 at the time.

ALongHardWinter · 11/07/2021 20:27

I was a couple of months off being 3 years old,so I have no memory of it at all. My parents both hated football so I can't imagine they watched the match,or let my older brothers watch it,who were 11 and 9. I don't recall it ever being spoken about in our household. Tbh,I never even realised until I was about 13 that we had won the World Cup in 1966!

ruthieness · 11/07/2021 20:27

I was 5 and we watched on a teeny tiny black white television high up in a bar in Italy whilst on a caravan holiday - we had a banner in the back of the caravan "England for the Cup" and would honk and wave frantically whenever we passed another GB vehicle. We were required to be absolutely silent through out the whole match! and I think we were!

RancidOldHag · 11/07/2021 21:16

Doubt it - kick off was 3pm!

But too busy to watch - very probable! Maybe she'd have listened on the wireless?

armanted · 11/07/2021 21:55

It was my 17th birthday and I watched the match on TV with all my brothers. Went out to a club that evening and coming back through Trafalgar square I was picked up by some boys and passed over the heads of the crowd to a fountain where I was dropped in and held under, it was terrifying. I then had to stand on the tube with a huge puddle spreading around me and my false eyelashes peeling off.

Oh yes, I remember that day extremely well.
