Did golden age movie stars have personal assistants?

And wondering if golden age movie stars like Elizabeth Taylor and so on had PAs. I can't find any evidence of them!

If not, why is it a more modern invention?

If anyone has sources I'd love to read them, I couldn't find anything after a quick Google.

I was a kid at the time - it was probably late 70s / early 80s so I didn’t really understand how exciting it was or who she was really
I found out more as I got older after she’d stopped working for her - sounds an amazing job but very demanding, you were never really off duty. But she went to some amazing places and met lots of other famous people along the way.

A lot of actors were contacted to studios so I imagine a PA. Was glued to their side.
