Hi everyone!

Has anyone got any recommendations for a board game for a bright 5 year old? He can add and read simple sentences.

Thanks!

Mine still likes some of the Orchard Toys games. He’s also a fan of Junior Monopoly and Labyrinth. We all like cooperative games with Forbidden Island our favourite.

MerylSqueak · 10/07/2021 17:08

What a Performance by Orchard

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/07/2021 17:09

Orchard Toys Tummy Ache! is one of the best children's games ever, every child seems to love it

Junior monopoly. DD2 is 6 and has been enjoying it for a couple of years. I like it too. She also likes Junior Game of Life.

samwitwicky · 10/07/2021 17:14

Snakes and ladders

Fivemoreminutes1 · 10/07/2021 17:30

Ludo
Enchanted forest
Don’t wake dad
Risk junior
Monopoly junior

PeterPomegranate · 10/07/2021 17:34

Our 5 year old loves Monza by Haba. Don’t be output off that the box is in German. There are English instructions. You don’t need to be able to read but it’s good for strategising what to do with the dice you get.

Rhino Hero by Haba is also good fun.

PeterPomegranate · 10/07/2021 17:35

We all like Qwirkle. It’s a bit like scrabble but with shapes and colours.

Authenticcelestialmusic · 10/07/2021 17:38

King domino, Sleeping queens, Quacks of quedlingburg, sagrada, dobble, loot, colour smash, Zeus on the loose. You will have to assist with some of them (for example using the tools in sagrada if they cannot place a dice, I often select the tools rather than pick randomly) but my 5 year olds love all of the above.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 10/07/2021 17:41

My 5 year olds loves:
Snacks and ladders
Frustration
Ludo
Times tables from orchard
Match and spell from orchard
Hungry hippos
Kerplunk
And mousetrap
(Not all strictly board games)

Saisong · 10/07/2021 17:42

We have enjoyed Qwirkle (I got the travel one as it suits little fingers and doesn't need such a big table top), Dobble, Labyrinth (good for all ages), Scrabble Junior

DinosaurOfFire · 10/07/2021 17:42

Dragomino is lovely, you have to match tiles and turn over/ hatch different coloured eggs to find baby dragons/ empty shells. My 3 (8, 6, 4) love it.

autumnkate · 10/07/2021 17:57

Thanks everyone- lots to look at x

Connect Four is perfect for that age - they can play without being strategic and then the strategy elements come later

Frustration

Card games might be better than board games - you can get younger/first versions of uno and dobble

supercalifragilistic123 · 10/07/2021 18:03

We like

Carcassonne
Rhino hero
Race to the treasure
Bugs in the kitchen
Qwirkle

Plus uno, double and the monopoly card game.

princessandthedragon · 10/07/2021 18:07

Sneaky Snacky Squirrel is our favourite

FindingMeno · 10/07/2021 18:07

Snakes and ladders was about the biggest hit round that age.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 10/07/2021 18:24

Labyrinth, blokus, sorry!, pop to the shops

Also ticket to ride but it's a loooong game with a 5 year old playing

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 10/07/2021 18:37

Sum swamp is great

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:42

DS loves games. We go to our local board game cafe a lot 😍
dobble (more of a card game!),
chess,
Disney Eye Found It game,
junior monopoly,
guess who
Normal cluedo (? There are lots of versions! I’m used to Super Sleuth from my childhood but the one DS plays is the normal one I think)
Frustration/Race to Base
Forbidden Island
Floundering
Mastermind
Humour Dumpty Wall Game (bit babyish by now but fun!)

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:42

*Humpty

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:43

Oh and all the Orchard classics of course, shopping list etc!

Collaborative ones are brill - forbidden island, Disney eye found it - but I do think it’s good to play against people and lose too!

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:44

Ooh if he’s keen on maths too Mammoth Maths (Orchard) is nice.

Terrazzo · 10/07/2021 18:46

Also not a board game but he’d probably like some story cubes.

SheABitSpicyToday · 10/07/2021 18:46

We play
Cluedo
Chess
Monopoly junior
Scrabble junior
Trivial pursuit
Horrible science germ game
Ludo
Snakes and ladders
Articulate
