Tips for top button

So DS2 is going to secondary school in September. I thought it would be teaching him how to tie a tie we would have problems with but no he can do that fine. What he cant do is do up the top button on his shirt. It is stiff with being a new shirt. Any tips on helping him do this? Literally never worn a shirt in my life and DS1 didn't have a problem so no clue what to do.

Wash the shirt - all new clothes / fabrics have a certain amount of 'dressing' in them ( brand new fabrics are generally damp from dyes or different finishes in the factory) .
Just a short wash can soften them up quite a bit. As a sewer/ dressmaker I always wash fabrics before cutting and sewing.
