I'd like to buy a really nice pen (in a box / case) for my 11yo goddaughter. Any suggestions?

I don't want to go for something fusty like a Parker as they seem quite old fashioned. I'd like it to be something cool and pretty that she'll like taking to school. Has anyone seen anything nice?

Thanks!

Cross wanderlust are beautiful. I have the Antelope. They're not cheap though - about €65.

Before you spend loads think about how you would feel if she lost it or it was stolen.

QuimReaper · 10/07/2021 14:19

I think spending money on things like this always carries the threat of loss, I'm happy with that and don't have any expectation that she'll still be using it when she's 30 Smile

@QuimReaper - I absolutely love mine. And to make it even better, I bought purple ink cartridges for it Smile

This is the refill - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0049GKA4W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Mont blanc

QuimReaper · 10/07/2021 14:49

They are beautiful, I should say!

Do you think an 11yo would prefer a ballpoint for being more practical or a cartridge for being more special-feeling and different?

Ooooh it must be cartridge if you can change the ink colour! I hadn't even thought of that!

The cartridge I got is just an ordinary refill. It's the same as the ballpoint refill except it's rollerball. You can use either option in the pen. I just prefer rollerball as I think the writing looks nicer. You could always get the pen with a ballpoint (you can get either) and a rollerball refill to replace when the first one finishes.

The Swarovski Crystal ones are lovely.

How about Lamy? Their designs are more modern and they do pens with multiple colours and pens that collapse down - Google Lamy Pico for a makeup bag.

ExcitingTimes2021 · 10/07/2021 21:35

I agree with the Swarovski Crystal pens. I have one and it’s beautiful! Iv actually had two. I got one as a graduation present but a colleague half inched it of the desk! So I asked for another one for my other half last Christmas! X

colours are lovely

Seeing as everyone else is putting up links to their lovely pens, I feel a link to the cross one is in order www.cross.com/cr_en_ie/writing-instruments/by-collections/wanderlust

Op - you need to let us know what you decide (I like pens in case you haven't guessed Grin)

AuditAngel · 10/07/2021 21:43

Cross pens are lovely to write with, I have a whole set, and the antelope looks amazing.

DH bought me assorted pens, including the Cross ones. I said not to but me another pen unless he bought Mont Blanc. He did and I hate it! Most of theirs are big and chunky, but he bought be a slim one and it is just too lightweight for me.

I know what you mean about Parker pens, I have inherited my grandfather’s, Grandmother’s and my mums. But they do have some funky ones, I remember seeing a royal blue see through one,

SummerStressing · 10/07/2021 22:21

I bought my FIL a pen from the ‘pen heaven’ website. It had lots of lovely pens and some brands that I had never heard of.

They also do engraving, which may not be an 11 year olds thing! FIL liked it though Grin.

I think the Cross Wanderlust ones look lovely, but I think too much of a risk for school, especially for an 11 year old. A lovely present to keep at home though.

My girls had Lamy fountain pens at school and they write beautifully for their price. I was so impressed with them that I bought myself a couple and use them in preference to my Montblanc.

I may be missing the point of the thread here ever so slightly but I know several 11 year olds who would be really confused if I brought them a pen as a gift. Is this something she said she wanted?
