Why will he not go to the doctor?

My brother was complaining last year about jot being able to sleep at night. It was a problem that was there even before last summer. I suggested for him to go to the doctor last summer but he never went. To this day he is still complaining of insomnia but he will not go to the doctor. Why will he not go to the doctor? Are all men like this and that fucking useless about their own health?
He was using illegal drugs before so I don't know if drugs would cause insomnia. I don't know what his drug status is now.

I wouldn't go to a doctor for insomnia either.

What would be the point?

I'm reading this at 3am because I'm an insomniac. Honestly, going to the doctor doesn't help insomnia, if it did we'd all be cured instead of being on MN in the middle of the night . Your brother probably wouldn't get any joy from a doctor's visit - they might give him some sleepers ( or maybe not) or they might talk about sleep hygiene or self hypnosis, but at the end of the day he'll probably still have good old insomnia.

All I can suggest is that he should stop complaining about it to other people, because it's a very boring topic and nobody understands what it's like so he may as well just stop talking about it.

Tell him to get some Nytol.
What do you think the GP will do?

I found following the sleepio app got me about an hour per night more sleep, which is worth having.

They don't do FA for insomnia here. Pointless to go to the GP and not really anyone's business but his.

StepladderToHeaven · 09/07/2021 18:52

From your title I assumed that whoever he was, he had a cancer symptom or something! Insomnia... shrug... I prob wouldn't go to the doctor either.

RainbowChameleon · 09/07/2021 19:23

Yeah that's why statistically men die younger. Won't go to Dr. By time they do whatever it is is too far gone. Or drop dead.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/07/2021 19:25

He'll just get waffle about sleep hygiene; maybe some leaflets.

wjg65ka · 09/07/2021 19:27

I would go for insomnia; they could provide support or medication, or any help in general. I can't imagine how hard it not being able to sleep Sad

RosesAndHellebores · 09/07/2021 19:30

Gosh my gp prescribes amitryptiline and it really helps. OTH my dh has been to the Dr about 3 times in 30 years!

ArnoldBee · 09/07/2021 19:34

My hubby has been raising insomnia with his gp for years. All they prescribe is warm milk, warm baths and lavender oil. He just wants a good night's sleep cos they don't prescribe sleeping pills these days.

They might dish out some anti-depressants and leaflets and waffle about apps but that's about the extent of the 'support'.

Try Nytol. The one you need to ask the pharmacist for. But at the moment I'm on valerian from Healthspan which is giving me a solid seven hours. Piriton hayfever capsules can also help.
