My Dad is in hospital with Covid - How do we pay his credit cards billls??

My Dad is currently in critical care ward with Covid. My Mum is trying to pay his credit card bills, but we can't pay online as we don't have his login details!
No he doesn't pay them by direct debit - he has always paid manually.
He has online accounts, but we can't make head nor tale of his password book!
Because we can't make head nor tale of his password book we can't access his bank account to pay from there either.
My Mum knows how much to pay - it's written in his diary and she has the funds to pay it, from her bank account.

I've said to my Mum to try going through on the phone lines (but again we don't have security info!), She has the credit cards and knows how much to pay.
I've suggested if the worst comes to the worst them to press the option for bereavement/person has died, even though he hasn't and hope that they can help.
If it helps the companies are Capital One and Amazon Credit Card (New Day)
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Yes, phone and press the bereavement option.

Megan2018 · 09/07/2021 12:58

You don’t need his login details, just do a Bacs payment from your mums account. You just need their bank account details, the reference will be his credit card number

JustMary · 09/07/2021 12:58

I believe if its connected to a bank you can pay instore as long as you have his card.

If you have an actual bill (paper, or print the email/online one) your DMum can pay over the counter at a bank (and probably at a post office too)

PolarCub · 09/07/2021 13:07

thank you !
I should have said my Mum has Covid too (although she is feeling ok, just a heavy cold feeling) and is in isolation. So going physically somewhere is out.
Mum went to pay via her online banking, but with the new security measures, they want the exact name of the account it's going to, and the sort code - again we don't have that info - we don't have the physical bills!

Isn't that info on the front of the credit cards?

Try phone banking. Had to do similar when dh was in hospital . Otherwise take credit card into a branch and pay over counter.

PolarCub · 09/07/2021 13:19

@JustMary
Only long card number. Valid from -to and My Dad's name

I know on a debit card it has the sort code and account number

No you can't press bereavement option it could lead to endless complications. Whats wrong with old fasioned cheque by post.

PippaGrace · 09/07/2021 13:27

There should be an automated payment line when you call the bank. I know for sure Capital One has one, I used to have a card with them.

HappyBirthdayMrPresident · 09/07/2021 13:27

Have you received the actual paper bill as it gives information on how to pay from that?

PolarCub · 09/07/2021 13:28

We aren't going to tell him he's dead! Cheque by post - assuming you have a cheque book (a lot of accounts don't anymore) Also that there's enough time to send a cheque! Also the help pages of these credit cards aren't very helpful - Amazon credit card - you need to login to the account to get the answers to most the payment help . Capital one - nothing there with address to send to etc

You don't have to answer security questions before being able to pay?

no paper bill! Can't access his emails either - again can't decipher his password book

Only have his paper diary with date and how much to pay

Can you collect the actual credit card, go to a bank and pay the amount onto that card (your mum can transfer the funds online to your account

DogsSausages · 09/07/2021 13:32

this may help

Bigboysmademedoit · 09/07/2021 13:32

There will be a very small phone number on the back of his credit card - ring it and don’t choose an option - that usually triggers a person answering the call and they’re usually very helpful once you explain.

SpiritInTheNight · 09/07/2021 13:33

Have a look at the credit card companies website, somewhere it will provide bank details to do a BACs and use your dads credit card number as the reference. I’ve done this before when I had to make a payment to a credit card.

We might end up doing that

Are you on Twitter? I would tweet the bank and ask them if they will speak to you in a private message. Then explain the situation and ask them how your mum should pay.

I'm so sorry your dad and mum are ill and hope they recover quickly. Flowers
