If you hate football what do you do that makes you feel like this?

Sneer all you like, but you can't knock something that gives people moments like this.

Assuming football doesn't do it for you, where do you get those moments?

All kinds of mass events give people that feeling of elation, tribal belonging etc. Not just football.

I bet the Nuremberg rallies inspired those kind of feelings in a fair number of the attendees. Just because lots of people feel good about something, that doesn't put it beyond all criticism.

"People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people, Jeremy."

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 09/07/2021 19:36

The above comment makes it sound like I hate football! I don't. I just don't think it's any more worthy than any other sport. It's 90 minutes of watching some men kick a ball, hopefully in a skilful and entertaining manner. That's all.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 09/07/2021 19:38

An ex DP and his best friend said once that football is more important than life and death. They were deadly serious.

I realised what pathetic lives they lead if they think that.

I get my thrills from my own life. I will be pleased if they win but it won't be a high, I don't really care.

Festivals, concerts, offshore sailing. Rugby.
Anything where you aren’t anticipating the spill over into violence, thuggishness and rampaging around as a savage pack wrecking places and people. Even the vocalisations are ugly and threatening.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 09/07/2021 19:47

I enjoy watching international football because seeing the raw passion it arouses in people pleases me. I enjoy watching the games too, but to a lesser extent. It's kind of an extreme people-watching thing 😉

torquewench · 09/07/2021 19:50

@TheAbyss

Boring and I cannot stand the noise, the cheering and shouting just goes right through me! I do not have it on in this house
Same here.

I prefer motorsports and follow motorbike racing - BSB, TT & MGP, WBK (a sport where UK has a current multiple world champion for the last 6 consecutive years, Jonathan Rea) and MotoGP. Other sports also interest me more than watching millionaires kicking a ball around. Football (club or national level) does nothing for me, nor, as has become apparent recently, the majority of my colleagues. In Liverpool, of all places.

Also love riding my bike when big (national or local) matches are on as the roads are always super quiet😁

Somarefuser · 09/07/2021 19:54

Domestic violence rates increase whether England win or lose

monkeynutter · 09/07/2021 19:56

I don't hate football but I hate the behaviour of some football fans, the attitude players give to the ref and how much money is involved. For those reasons I don't watch it, not even when England are playing.

I get the same elation from other sports when England do well. Or from friends/family exceeding at something.

That's a well known quote. Some people say football is a matter of life and death but it's more important than that. It's funny

Meruem · 09/07/2021 20:36

Well all I have to say on the matter is that I hope reports aren't true about Boris giving an extra bank holiday at some point if England win! I don't get paid for bank holidays and have zero interest in football so I would rather not lose a days pay for something so meaningless in my life!

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2021 20:49

My DH is the spit of Gary Cherone. And he can sing. Sadly, I'm not in a permanent state of euphoria!

Ive been thinking about this thread today and remembering the last time I had a feeling of pure joy/amazement at something outside of me. Just before lockdown, I went to see the Martin Crimp version of Cyrano de Bergerac with James McAvoy and was mesmerised. I couldn't get out of my seat at the end and I went home dazed. It's my favourite play anyway but it was breathtaking.

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2021 20:52

I saw a bloke the other day, top off, screeching that England reaching the final was hands down the best day of his entire life. The reporter checked. Yep, definitely the best thing that's ever happened to him. His wife and kids looked pretty gutted.

Wasn't it brilliant? I kept hoping they'd put it in the National Theatre at Home but they never did

I have no interest in any leagues, but my god I bloody love watching England and the feeling on Wednesday was ace

This post made me laugh.
Thoughtcontagion · 09/07/2021 21:02

I just have never been into football or any sport just not my thing, just me probably because as a child my dad and brother always forcing football at me and my mum and my grandparents was horse racing so now I’m just grinch about it all.

I love riding my bike, running and getting new PBs.

I went to see an concert and my favourite singer held my hand and I almost wet myself so I imagine that’s what England fans are feeling.

Peacelillyhippy · 09/07/2021 21:02

Football is just plain boring. Not interested. What I hate though is the bullshit that goes with it: rudeness, nastiness, aggression. And i just find the whole tribalism/enforced patriotism overwhelming.

Football fans should do their thing. Go for it. But leave me alone with no snarky comments to do mine and i'll keep my observations to myself. Just like the rest of life.

bumblingbovine49 · 09/07/2021 22:58

There is A LOT of snobbery on this this thread. Football has always been a working class game in this country and that shows in the attitudes to it on here

I remember a lot of people screaming at Mo Mowlam winning his Olympic races with very few people complaining about the noise Hmm. Also very few people were sneering at the happiness in this country at how well our athletes did generally during the Olympics . When British athletes do well in other sports I don't notice anywhere near as much moaning about the fans or bemoaning the fact that the sport itself even even exists.

The fact is football is an incredibly popular game across the whole world, so it must have something going for it and I don't even watch it much. It can be quite dull a lot of the time but many sports are dull to watch in-between the moments of brilliance. Football is not alone in that.

Voice0fReason · 09/07/2021 23:01

I find football dull and boring.
I find penalty shootouts an unsatisfactory way of deciding a game.
I hate to hear fans booing - particularly during anthems but also during the game.
I hate to see the players arguing with the referee on every single decision.
There is a level of unsporting behaviour that is greater than I have seen in any other sport.

I get joy from many other places, including other sports.

HereBeFuckery · 09/07/2021 23:45

@LiJo2015

I find the amoumtbofnmoent footballers earn abhorrent. I despise wag culture and the ambition for thousands of girls/women to be wags. I hate the behaviour exhibited by so many footballers which is then expunged from media owing to status/money. I hate the associated violence at games and the association of increased in DV when games like this are on. I hate the ludicrous and obscene amount of money that football association are charging for kits... This could go on tbh.
Literally every word of this. Plus the mindless assumption that everyone is interested in football; to the point where 'sports news' is essentially football news (which is never introduced as 'and in the football') plus one other each day on rotation.

It's dull, repetitive and to my not very interested eyes, just lots of kicking in triangle shapes and pretending to fall over and roll around a bit.

I also cannot get over the hairstyles. I mean. They cannot expect to be taken seriously as professional people with hair that a Sindy doll would hide under a hat.

Somarefuser · 10/07/2021 00:58

If football makes people happy and proud, why the verbal and physical violence to nearest and dearest as well as strangers?
Jumping up and down and shrieking with delight is seen in a lot of activities and events.
Yelling abuse at opponents, threatening and punching, and and alarming those not even involved is largely just football enthusiasts.
Yes, I can knock something that regularly creates this sort of ASB.

BBC tonight

‘ A Danish family has described the "fear" they felt when they were assaulted by England fans after the Euro 2020 semi-final.
Eva Greene, 43, said it was "like a zombie movie" when fans wearing England shirts surrounded a bus she and her family boarded from Wembley.
Her nine-year-old child was forced to flee as his father was punched in the stomach by one supporter, she said.
"I'm telling my Italian friends to stay indoors on Sunday," Mrs Greene added‘

SirenSays · 10/07/2021 01:55

I think I probably could have tolerated football if people didn't act like it was the most amazing thing on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I don't go out of my way to tell people how utterly dull the sport is to me, but I would have been crossing my fingers for a loss if it went on longer than Sunday.

As for what else gets me going, the list is pretty endless. I'm a massive fan of combat sports - Muay Thai, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, judo, mma. If you want thousands of screaming fans you need look no further. I love F1 and never miss a race.

Then there are all the personal goals - completing a difficult hike, bouldering and free diving to name a few. When we were swimming eye to eye with a whale shark, I'd argue the feeling of pure joy was even stronger for me than it would be watching any football match.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2021 03:45

Oooh yes to live music. And then just awesome moments in life. A baby being born (anyone's baby!) people getting married or falling in love. Someone doing really well at their job or achieving something brilliant like getting a book published, especially someone I have a close connection to. Movies that push those emotional buttons. Nights (or days) where you're with someone you get on so well with that you laugh until your sides hurt.

Your ex DP was repeating a famous Bill Shankly quote. I know bugger all about footy but even I know that one:

"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."

Which is similar to a Steve McQueen quote:

"Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting"

Men and their chosen sport, eh?

Also, 😂🤣😂 at Mo Mowlam running in the olympics 😂

I am working class and don't like football. It is not mandatory.

As PPs have said, the outrage at not liking it can be annoying and actually very aggressive.
