If you hate football what do you do that makes you feel like this?

Sneer all you like, but you can't knock something that gives people moments like this.

Assuming football doesn't do it for you, where do you get those moments?

Live theatre and music. And good sex. You asked.

Kanaloa · 09/07/2021 13:01

I will say I feel the same sort of indifference to all sports really, unless I’m playing. I do watch gymnastics - my dd loves it - and although I appreciate the skill I don’t feel any personal stake in who wins.

Bryonyshcmyony · 09/07/2021 13:02

I get a huge high from football and crushing lows

As my dad used to say, its the hope that kills you

Not like proper crushing lows, I mean I'm not actually manic. But I'm sad until I get up and go and do something else

TheAbyss · 09/07/2021 13:04

yeah, I have my shouting screeching neighbours to endure again on Sunday night then, be glad when its all over

Football leaves me cold. I just don't get the appeal of 22 grown men kicking a bag of air around and getting over excited when they have actually done the job they are paid to do. Can you imagine if a bus driver started running around and kissing everybody because he got to the depot on time?

RosieGuacamosie · 09/07/2021 13:07

I mean, I personally hate it when the football is on, although I don’t begrudge other people enjoying it and it’s nice to see others having a nice time, however for me it’s particularly unpleasant because:

  • pretty much can’t go to the local pub/city centre when the football is on due to drunk/shouty fans
  • the majority of work conversations revolving around football which means people like me with no interest are excluded
  • not being able to make plans with friends “in case we win”
  • the screaming and shouting and (in my area anyway), throwing pints in the air?!
  • the increase in drink drivers the morning after
  • the revolting football chants (see towards Sweden “you’re shit but your birds are fit”)
  • the increase in domestic violence
  • the lack of decent prime time tv Wink

So whilst I don’t begrudge people enjoying it, it’s not hard to see why some people hate it!

Can I just check you feel the same about Olympic Athletes, Wimbledon tennis players, theatre actors, pop singers, etc? They're all just "doing their job" too!
Soubriquet · 09/07/2021 13:09

Absolutely nothing

I couldn’t care less if they win or lose but I think people need to get a hold of themselves

Screaming chants in the streets late at night and destroying things is just pathetic. It’s a game

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 09/07/2021 13:14

I occasionally watch football because watching elite sport can be entertaining, similarly for the Olympics. I don't feel any particular emotion about it though. I'll watch on Sunday, but I'm not overly bothered by the result (other than it would be nice for my England supporting friends if we won).

I experience euphoria, elation etc. when I (or my DH) do well at the sports we enjoy. I can't work up that much excitement about other people doing sport though.

Weepingwillows12 · 09/07/2021 13:14

I dont hate football but I dont actively follow it. I think watching most sports can give you the same highs and lows and there are sports that, to me, are more interesting. I also actively dislike things like booing of anthems, football hooliganism and the shirts off, drunk, obnoxiousness of lots of the local teens/20 somethings in my town that mean I tend to keep well away on match nights etc but I will be watching the final because it is a big event.

ThePlantsitter · 09/07/2021 13:16

I hate the fact that a football game / team is then extended to represent the whole country not just football in the country. It would be all right if people didn't behave so badly but all the booing other people's national anthems, lazers in peoples eyes, threatening Italian kids in South London etc etc makes it look like the whole country is a thuggish twat.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 09/07/2021 13:16

And this! Grin

Good live music and theatre can definitely inspire that kind of emotion in me.

God I miss it....

When was the last time you saw any of those rushing up and leaping on their team mates for doing their job? A hug maybe but a pile-on, lifting their shirts and running around the venue? I've yet to hear any actor yell "get innnnnn" after someone else has delivered a line.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/07/2021 13:22

It's fun to play. I find it utterly boring to watch. And I hate the fan culture around it.

I love rugby, cricket, F1 and tennis. When NZ won the Test Cricket World Cup I was so delighted.

NursieBernard · 09/07/2021 13:29

Live music gives me that feeling, although I can assume it's a better feeling as I don't have the need for anyone else to lose to get it.

FinallyHere · 09/07/2021 13:30

some footy fans have this idea that they have access to some sort of higher state of euphoria than anyone else

I think it's because men tend to be discouraged from showing emotion, but are allowed to, even encouraged to amongst other supporters.

Some darker emotions do come out from those who already have them, too. We don't tend to see so clearly, otherwise unless v v close to the perpetrators.

Doublestar · 09/07/2021 13:31

It’s mostly a cultural thing. I dislike the football fans, who create a large number of headlines for being thugs, create rubbish, make racist remarks and are really intimidating if you encounter them in person. No, not all football fans are like that, but the boorish, jeering men who typify football are what makes me really dislike it.

This.

Also I think people who are of more of an individual mindset don't tend to follow sports teams. To me it's just incredibly boring. The players mostly seem arrogant and thick - why would I want to support these overpaid meatheads? I hate the sheep-like mentality of most football fans, it is usually people wanting to be "one of the lads" and revolves around drinking and loutish behaviour.
I don't like the fact that matches are used as an excuse for anti-social behaviour (yes I mean you neighbours up the road partying until 2am after the win the other day) or in my old exes case, crying and tantrumming when they lose. Such a waste of emotion.

Football fans are generally mugs of low to medium intelligence IMO. Sorry!

sashh · 09/07/2021 13:37

I wasn't going to sneer, but I am now because you obviously started this thread to get answers from those of us who don't care and you can't even be bothered to explain, you expect me to follow a link?

I'll save the mental load to think about the women who re now living in fear of what their partners are going to do if England do not win their next match.

Bryonyshcmyony · 09/07/2021 13:38

Ah the intellectual snobbery. Wonders how long that would take.

WeeFae · 09/07/2021 13:40

It is so very boring and all the constant news stories and stuff on FB is tedious.

Maybe he would if there were 11 other bus drivers trying to stop him getting his bus in to the depot for 90 minutes?
PRabbit · 09/07/2021 13:46

I like board games. It can get quite tense. Although we have to play online nowadays and talk via Zoom.

I prefer the Tour de France! It's been brilliant this year.
