Changing surname back to maiden name

If a woman gets married and changes her surname, can she just change it back to her maiden name? Does this need to be done by deed poll? This scenario involves staying married btw.

A married woman can use either her maiden or married name wherever and whenever she chooses

I just found this on gov.uk:

Changing surname back to maiden name

I just want to use my name again 😄. And I'm more of a feminist now too.

Two friends of mine just continued to use their maiden name after marriage.

It saves a lot of faff if you do it by deed poll.
Inform HMRC firstly - they're used by other government agencies to
confirm your name change.

It's been a while since I did it but just told people I was reverting to my maiden name and showed my marriage certificate that had both names on

Did my Passport first just put in a covering note though I believe they now have a section for change of name

The only problem I had was constantly being questioned as to why I was changing my name and the assumption I was divorcing

Just noticed you said you're married.
Phone HMRC, they deal with this kind of thing all the time.
They will do an AKA.

Really interested in the answer to this too - I wanted to revert to my maiden name for similar reasons but figured that deed poll was too much hassle

Glitterandmud · 09/07/2021 09:04

I did this, it was fine, no hassle and no deed poll needed. We're still married.

I really want to do this to even though I’ve been married for 18 years!
I really regret losing my maiden name.
My DH would be upset though I think!
