One finger? Two fingers? Whole hand?!

I go with the whole hand. I'd like to be a 2 finger person but I worry about not getting it right and looking weird. You have to keep your fingers together if you're using 2.

Just thought about it this morning as I was at it non stop down the 15 mile one lane road to Loch Etive.

So how do you thank other drivers? Anybody do the grin and 2 thumbs up "fandabidozy" style?

whole hand mostly, 1 finger if I am tired.

Where were you heading, Bonawe?

I generally lift four fingers although, when on the road down Loch Awe, I developed a bit of a salute ...

orangejuicer · 07/07/2021 20:55

I do peace sign/reverse V. Hmm

gibbertyofah · 07/07/2021 20:59

Raise of 4 fingers from the steering wheel and an slight head nod - particularly on Scottish weekend roads :)

Borka · 07/07/2021 21:00

Whole hand usually, or one finger if they've insisted on letting me out when it's not at all helpful.

I can confirm that the thumbs up thing works, I found myself unexpectedly returning a thumbs up recently.

@thedancingbear

4 fingers here

However, if the person i've pulled over for isnt the kind to acknoweldge that you've pulled aside to let them pass, they get a double thumbs up and a massive THANK YOU as they come by

Even better when the windows are down Grin

TheValeyard · 07/07/2021 21:27

Whole hand and a 'cheers, mate' nod from me.

I follow the Rob Newman advice - "Thanks for letting me into this gap in heavy traffic. I will now take it, looking at you, with one hand on the wheel..."

People who don't return a wave are worse than Hitler.

Ditto! Whole hand 😱
BackBoiler · 07/07/2021 22:20

I stick my thumb up!

LuluJakey1 · 07/07/2021 22:27

I slightly raise my right forefinger from the steering wheel and nod once, unless it is an attractive man in which case I smile.

Splann · 07/07/2021 22:30

It’s all one fingered round here, it does seem mildly rude.

Anyone else reminded of that old One born every minute episode where the woman was shocked that the midwife stuck her hand up her fanjo? She just kept staring at her husband and repeating “whole hand” with a haunted look on her face Shock

Now on Skye and getting more thumbs up. I've been doing 3 fingers and it feels jolly exciting.

Round here it's the ubiquitous hazard lights - on for 3 flashes and then turn off. Except I can never find my hazards so I do the 4 finger with thumb on the steering wheel thing.

In S London hazards can also be used to exempt you from any parking restrictions. As long as you put them on it's fine to park on double yellows, loading bays, the pavement or in the middle of the road. They must also allow exemptions from other rules of the road as they are rarely turned off when pulling out (which makes it tricky to see the indicators) and are continued to be used whilst driving along the road.

They are rarely used for actual hazards. Unless they are self-identifying....

Seeingadistance · 09/07/2021 10:54

@lachy

Index finger raised and a nod.
This.
BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 09/07/2021 10:56

In the car - whole hand. On my road bike - nod and smile.

Grenlei · 09/07/2021 10:59

Whole hand, but I always sort of lift my arm forward at the same time, so it can tend to look uncomfortably like a nazi salute Blush

DP does the 4 fingers while holding steering wheel with his thumb. I need to get on board with that.

I gave way to a elderly chap a few weeks ago on a narrow lane and he gave me a thumbs up! Never had one before, made me smile all day Grin

MyMabel · 09/07/2021 11:03

IM A THREE FINGER GAL.

I do some weird scary movie “take my strong hand” kinda shit. It’s really hard to explain.

Like my hand is on too of the wheel, my thumb and little fingers continue to rest on the wheel while I lift the three inbetween as a “cheers bud!”

MrsVeryTired · 09/07/2021 11:06

Four fingers with thumb under the wheel.

bananaboats · 09/07/2021 11:32

4 finger technique for me too but I have noticed an increase in the thumbs up recently from other drivers for some reason!
