A mate was just saying she doesn't know how to ride a bike.
What life skills do you think are essential for kids to learn ?

Cycling is probably much easier to learn when young but not essential for everyone and can be picked up later. DD taught the girl who became her best friend in their first week of uni.

Swimming
Budgeting
Basic first aid
Basic cooking
Basic DIY

I can't ride a bike, mid 40s, never felt like I'm lacking a life skill!

I wouldn't count riding a bike as a life skill in the same category as swimming.

I know lots of people who cannot ride a bike it's hardly stopping them living their lives to the fullest.

I'd say key life skills are stuff like:

Basic first aid
Swimming
Understanding of money management
How to get help e.g calling 999
Knowing how to cook some simple meals
Self care

Reading Writing Arithmetic
Basic child care and psychology
Swimming
Nutrition and basic cooking
Contraception
First Aid
Cycling
Personal finance & law
Driving
Housekeeping
House & clothes maintenance
Basic pet care and animal psychology

I would add:

  • Time management
  • All aspects of "house work" (cleaning, washing, cooking, ...)
  • be Internet/ Social media savy
