Name for a new gin?

I know all you lot have great imaginations. I am producing my own gin, just on a very small scale to be sold at local shows, markets etc. The one thing I am stuck on is a unique name which will stand out but also means something.
My late mother was brought up in Singapore and loved an afternoon gin so thought I could have a name which could conjure up that memory. I can't actually use her name as it is boring and old fashioned, think Doris or similar. This wouldn't sound very sexy or enticing for a gin!
I would love some ideas please as I can't move on with anything else until I have a name.

@FlibbertyGiblets

Robinsons.
Oh, yes! Though for some reason, like PPs, Jurong Island was my first thought.

I am also becoming convinced that there is room in the market for a gin called Doris. And if you introduce some other flavours, they could be Vera, Mavis, Mabel etc
I can see them lined up at your local Artisan market

Country Club Gin, it’s got the link with Singapore for those in the know, and a bit of a general upmarket vibe.

How about Singapore Afternoon Gin.

Or Yardarm (if they used that ex-pat 'sun is over the yardarm' phrase meaning it's late enough in the day (but still quite early) to start drinking.

I’m intigrued @Grandadwasthatyou about your mum enjoying an afternoon tipple of gin when she lived in Singapore! Was this during the years the British Army was still there? I’m wondering if she lived in one of the beautiful Black & White colonial houses (assuming she was from an expat family?)

Was your mother Singaporean from the Chinese, Malay, Indian, Tamil or Eurasian ethnic groups? I’m asking because it might help give a clue towards a name for your gin!

I lived in Singapore for a few years in various districts. Some district or local names I remember are Coronation, Sentosa, Seletar, Serangoon, Toh Payoh, Pandan Valley, Alexandra Park, Rochester Park, Adam Park, Mount Pleasant, River Valley, Clementi, Kallang, Bras Basah, Buona Vista, Labrador Park, Pasir Panjang (means Long Beach in Malay), Bukit Timah (means Tin Hill in Malay), Kranji ....but there are so many more! Also a place we used to love going to by bum boat from the Changi airport area was the little rustic island of Pulau Ubin wh(Pulau means Island in Malay).

We also loved the Colbar (short for Colonial Bar) but I guess the word Colonial has negative connotations these days.

Jin-lin or new beGINning

DirtyBlonde · 06/07/2021 23:35

Yardarm gin already exists.

I think your DMum's name might be more promising. Though Mother's Ruin is already taken, so it might be hard to stand out on Mum - related words

Tuppence

(They used to say of gin, drunk for a penny, dead drunk for tuppence.)

Pinotpleasure · 06/07/2021 23:43

Jurong Gin sounds interesting, but unfortunately Jurong island is basically an oil refinery!

Sadly the Robinson’s department store closed down for good about a year ago :(

The Tanglin Club is one of the original country clubs favoured by the ‘old money’ Singaporeans but they might object to Tanglin Club gin. Actually there is a district called Tanglin and my kids went to the (British) Tanglin Trust School. Maybe Tanglin Gin?

How about something like The Colonel’s gin - although that might conjure up some not nice connotations of the empire. I like it though for some reason

Or Ginevieve?

sadie9 · 06/07/2021 23:49

I would go with a name related to your own local area. Then you have the local history which includes you and your mother.

Grandadwasthatyou · 06/07/2021 23:50

Wow!! So many answers and food for thought!

@Pinotpleasure .. yes she was married to my late DF who was in the army but they split up when I was quite young and are now both long gone so I can't ask about memories, places etc anymore.

I really wouldn't go for a pun name if this is an artisan gin you want people to think of as premium with a price point to match and a healthy profit margin for you (I hope!) as it cheapens the brand and makes it feel novelty rather than quality.

VerticalHorizon · 06/07/2021 23:53

Works ok for countless craft beers!

actorbynight · 06/07/2021 23:54

Orchid gin

youvegottenminuteslynn · 06/07/2021 23:56

I just think shoe horning the word gin into a name feels cheesy, whereas the many craft beers that have quirky or fun names feel playful and clever rather than novelty or cheesy. Just my opinion!
