Shared Parental Leave

Sorry, probably not the right board but didn't know where it should go.

If we are sharing parental leave how does it work?

I'm taking the first 39 weeks, so will get my enhanced pay and SMP.

When he takes over he won't get any SMP as that will all have been taken by me, but will he be entitled to any of the enhanced pay from his company? For example, his company offers their staff the first 3 months of maternity leave at full pay. I'm assuming not, because I'll have had enhanced pay from my company and you usually only get one lot during a mat leave year, but you never know...

What does his employer offer for shared paternity pay/leave though as it may be very different to what it offers for maternity leave/pay

Yes they don't actually mention anything about offering shared parental pay, just maternity pay. I'm assuming it would be SMP only, which would all be gone.

I think his 3 months will basically be unpaid, as mine would have been if I'd taken the full year.

It did seem too good to be true to think he'd get more than that, but I keep seeing on here that you should look to see which of you would get the higher pay from your company's package so just thought I'd see if anyone knew

You need to find out his company’s spl/ paternity policy. DH has just finished 6 weeks of spl and it was at statutory rate (his company are stingy). My company have just announced 6 months full pay for either parent on SPL.

Yes it's very company dependant. Mine offer whatever a woman on maternity would be on at that point, they give a decent enhancement early on but by the end it's statutory so DH (same employer) was on very little.

I'd still recommend it though if you can afford it, DH took a month each time when I went back to work and it was brilliant for all of us.
