What can I do in Carlisle?

I'm going to accompany DH on a trip just to get out of the house.

Even the teenagers are tempted to come for a ride.
I know nothing about the area at all.
Open minded to any suggestions please!

For the day or overnight?

Theres a place called "A World in Miniature" which is in the basement of a garden centre- it's been on my list for a while, ready for the next time we drive over that way

Tuillie House

The place you are talking about for the ' World in Miniature ' is Houghton Garden Centre it's on the edge of Carlisle, just off the M6 heading to the A69. We use the garden centre but haven't visited there.
Tuillie house is a good suggestion it's a musuem / art gallery , not too big but enough for a couple of hours. Opposite there is Carlisle Castle which is good , it has an armoury in there as well.
I love the cathedral , and it has a really interesting basement that holds a lot of the rest of Cumbria's churches artefacts . Quite a bit of Roman interest down there as well . I think you will find it a fairly interesting place to visit.

As it's a long drive from us. I think we will be there from lunchtime and depending on how DHs project goes we may need an overnight stop.

I've spotted Carlisle Castle.

The castle, cathedral and Tullie House museum are all close together, cathedral has a nice new cafe in the grounds, Across the street fromTullie House Bookends bookshop -new and second books and a cafe in the back, worth a visit for the building itself which was originally the offices of the Carliisle State Brewery scheme, if you go down into the basement you can still see the strong rooms.
