Roughly, how much petrol would you expect a 234 mile trip in a Seat Ibiza to cost?
I have no idea what year the car is etc, so just looking for a rough amount that you’d expect.
We shared a car ride and I’m wondering whether the amount the driver asking for is correct, it seems a big amount.

A quick Google suggests 15p a mile so about £36.
That of course needs halving.

Datsandcogs · 04/07/2021 12:50

I drive a bigger car than that, it’s easily 20p per mile in diesel. Are they expecting a contribution for wear and tear and insurance too? I think anything beyond 30p per mile would be excessive and then I would expect that to be split between the people sharing the journey. So 15p per mile (max) if there are 2 of you benefitting from the journey.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 04/07/2021 13:00

The tax mileage rate is 45p (drops to 25p after a certain amount of miles). That’s supposed to take into account fuel and wear and tear… Ive always used that to calculate what I’m expecting to pay; and I’ve never been asked for more than that.

So 236 * 0.45 is £106.20, divided by two is £53.10.

I reckon most people would probably say £40 is fine, but I’d have prepared to pay that.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 04/07/2021 13:01

Oh, somehow I completely missed that you’re only paying petrol Blush ignore me!

custardbear · 04/07/2021 13:05

I'd offer a bit more if it was their car and they drove, probably £30 or £40

Nothappy599 · 04/07/2021 13:06

I have a Seat Arona, v similar to a ibiza... I think.
Full tank would do that milage easily.
A full top up is about £39-42 depending on where you buy from.
I would ask £35.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/07/2021 15:59

I would say between £30-£40.

Rainbowshine · 04/07/2021 16:01

Perhaps they’re adding in the insurance costs as they will need to extend their cover to Europe post Brexit.

MumOf21 · 04/07/2021 16:18

I would estimate that the fuel cost alone would be around £35 taken over a long journey with a fair few miles completed on the Motorways, and without any long slow moving traffic delays.

However, that is not the true cost of the journey, also to be added onto the price is the cost of wear and tear, servicing, and outlay costs/depreciation on the value of the car which will put the true cost of the journey up much higher. My mileage allowance costs when working out in the community was 48p per mile.

Zilla1 · 04/07/2021 16:26

If the driver was going anyway then I think they would be a CF to expect more than half the petrol so c£35. How much did they want, OP? If they expect wear and tear then that's not a car share, that's the beginning of a profit exercise if they were going anyway.

Zilla1 · 04/07/2021 16:29

But if they were driving to the destination anyway, all the wear and tear would have been incurred by them. Perhaps offer them 10p for passenger seat wear though?

MargaretThursday · 04/07/2021 18:19

I'd roughly say £30 for the petrol, assuming paying around half, but if they're doing all the driving then I'd not resent giving them considerably more as it's a hassle driving. It's not just about the actual petrol money.

mnahmnah · 04/07/2021 18:33

I would say you paying £30-40 is about right, all things considered

FrDamo · 04/07/2021 18:58

A quick google suggests mpg for the Seat Ibiza averages at 50mpg so just less than 5 gallons used for 234 miles. Using £1.30 /litre for fuel (naturally some give and take there and apologies for mixing imperial and metric) that comes out at £38 approx*

So the pure fuel cost to you around £19 assuming no request for wear & tear.

  • all figures slightly rounded/approx but certainly the correct ball park. Used the honestjohn website where Ibiza mpg ranged 39-65 depending on exact model.
headintheproverbial · 04/07/2021 19:07

How you have to tell us what they asked you for!!

CandyLeBonBon · 04/07/2021 22:55

They're not driving TO Ibiza!
BastardMonkfish · 04/07/2021 22:59

'They're not driving TO Ibiza!'

Sorry that I didn’t reply! Thank you all for the comments - turns out they were very reasonable and probably undercharged me!
I feel terrible! It isn’t somebody I know very well, so have no idea about their character. Whatever they asked for I would’ve paid anyway to avoid drama, but because I know nothing about cars or fuel costs, I wanted to see what I really should be paying.
There were four of us, including the driver. The driver was going there anyway, but obviously was doing the other three of us a massive favour. They asked for £10pp for £30 in total. :)
Thanks for all the suggestions, I also bought them lunch.
