Hot wheels versus Scalextric

DS is a major lover of vehicles. I've been having a look, and it seems Scalextric are 1:32 with some 1:64, but Hot wheels are 1:64. Are they otherwise compatible? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Which are best to get and why? Thanks

I don’t recommend Scalextric for children much younger than 8. 8 might even be pushing it for the more technical demands of an advanced set.
You need a good deal of skill to navigate the track especially round bends because will easily hop out of the slot and fly off the track. For Ds1, that’s part of the fun but Ds2 doesn’t have the patience and gets easily frustrated.
Also it depends if you have the space to leave the track up for a few days. Assembling and disassembling Scalextric pieces is usually a little tougher than Hotwheels. You need to make sure that you tug evenly so you don’t snap off the connector tabs that hold them together, so it’s best if you can leave the track up for a while.
Lastly, my Ds1 likes that Scalextric is more realistic, but DS2 prefers Hotwheels because you can do stunts and loop the loops etc…
