I’ve discovered today that it is wrong, very wrong, to eat chocolate hobnobs with the chocolate side facing down

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I managed to force myself to eat them. But it’s not a natural way to proceed.

I don’t know why I didn’t turn them the right way up either - all I can say in my defence is I felt duty bound to prove that it was a rule that applied to each and every hobnob, not just the odd one here and there.

@imaginethemdragons

Ok just fucking stop.

You are all wantonly disregarding the threat of the tragic loss of chocolate should the biscuit suddenly crumble.
Chocolate on top, crumb loss is far better than chocolate chunk loss.
Come on. Think people, think.
Rolls eyes and mutters behind mask…FFS.

Well, if you've got your mask on surely all crumbs will be caught in the mask? And then you can just lick/hoover them up.
Bitofachinwag · 03/07/2021 22:00

I’m not going to any of those things, you only get two biscuits at a time
Fair point.

Americam · 03/07/2021 22:01

I was in hospital earlier this week, and at about 9pm I got ravenously hungry. I couldn’t get out of bed and I didn’t want the nurses to know I was hungry anyway (having had a lovely dinner what felt like 3 weeks earlier).

Anyway, I was texting dd and moaning about no biscuits. Next thing I knew, one of the lovely nurses appeared with 2 packets of biscuits (but only those packets with 3 biscuits each in them which didn’t touch the sides but the thought was there).

As a complete aside, is there anyone else in the world called Roald? I’m wondering if it was an accidental naming.

@Abitlikeabiscuit

Oh come on people. If it was a plain hobnob the non-chocolate covered side aka known as the bottom would be the bottom. But when it's covered in chocolate that then by default becomes the top and the original top side is demoted to bottom. Easy peasy.
I’m still trying to work this out but I think you’re right

@Cocolapew

Dunking chocolate biscuits is wrong, who wants melty chocolate. If you aren't quick enough it might slide off. Unless it's Cadburys chocolate fingers. That's allowed.
There is no danger, I repeat, no danger, of not being quick enough.

You speak sense (I think).

There's a novel set in ww2 where it was recommended to eat bread and butter with the butter side down, the better to taste it and make your butter ration go further.

The same principle could, I suppose, apply to chocolate hobnobs but I'm not convinced.

SwanShaped · 03/07/2021 22:23

Dunno about hobnobs, but my daughter eats toast upside down and pizza upside down. Does my head in but she’s only 3. I’ve tried to turn it round but she’s having none of it. But maybe it’s all about the taste buds, like others said. I’d not thought of that before

Americam · 03/07/2021 22:23

@Bitofachinwag, @imaginethemdragons won’t have her mask on while eating her biscuits. Unless this is something else I haven’t been told and there’s some secret osmotic process get biscuits through masks.

I think we’re all duty bound now to try eating biscuits/bread and butter/pizza etc the opposite way to our usual way.

@ahoyshipmates

You do know, of course, that the chocolate is on the bottom, and that the same applies to chocolate digestives?
Nooooooo!!!! I do NOT believe it!!! How do you know?!
NotNowPlzz · 03/07/2021 22:30

Roald, Scandi.
I get the logic of chocolate on the bottom side BUT it just feels morally wrong.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roald_Amundsen

It’s a Norwegian name actually (Roald Dahl’s parents were Norwegian)

Yy to POW style rations in hospitals by the way, when I stayed the delightful pensioners with whom I was incarcerated used to order the breakfast of kings; toast and jam, porridge, hot choc and tea, biscuits, the works. After day one, starving and blinking in the 10pm fluorescent ward lights, I understood why!

Fi1982 · 03/07/2021 22:36

Also I’m excited to try choc-bottomed biccies tomorrow… not sure I’ll like it as I enjoy a satisfy clag of choc and biscuit sticking to the roof of my mouth really.

MrsFionaCharming · 03/07/2021 22:39

I can confirm chocolate goes on the bottom. We once got bored during a free period at 6th form and called the McVities customer care line to ask.

winniesanderson · 03/07/2021 22:41

This will solve everything! I haven't tried them yet, afraid they won't live up to the hype I'm creating in my head.

I will have to concede defeat if McVitie’s gave you the answer @MrsFionaCharming.

I’m sure I dropped just as many crumbs eating them with the chocolate on the bottom today though as I usually do. I’ll get some more tomorrow and put it to the test.

Just tuck it through the little gap in the side of the mask and then hold it through the mask. Won't work if you're wearing an FFP3 mask, obviously.

FaceyRomford · 03/07/2021 23:06

Dunking biscuits is a crime and should be stamped out by all decent thinking people.

FaceyRomford · 03/07/2021 23:08

Sorry, that was to ahoyshipmates

Could you please test the Caramel and Chocolate Digestives too? I suspect less crumb-loss, but it would be good to have my theory confirmed by an independent testing panel.
FaceyRomford · 03/07/2021 23:09

Mr McVitie and his staff work hard to make sure biscuits are crunchy so why make them hot and soggy?

Bitofachinwag · 03/07/2021 23:10

Due to the stickiness of the caramel layer.
