My gentle kind son who's actually going through a lot at the moment and is on the waiting list for camhs has been having some stick from a couple of other boys in his year which he dealt with and brushed off but the other day, one of them kicked him to the ground, my ds son couldn't remember much but remembers some people laughing and some children saying 'are you ok?' Anyway the school dealt with this, no trouble since. Today a parent contacted me to say their child had informed her of a video circulating of the event on snap chat of the incident so it turns out it was actually being filmed!!! I asked If they could send me the video but apparently on snap chat, the story goes after a few seconds?? Is that right? My ds would he mortified that this has been circulating, according to this parent, nearly the whole school have seen it!! Where do I go from here? My son hadn't consented to this video and actually had no idea it had been filmed...Angry

Is there a way of finding the video on snap chat?

You take this straight to the police.

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 03/07/2021 20:02

Report to school safeguarding team

roguetomato · 03/07/2021 20:03

So he was assaulted and filmed? Contact the school and see what they say, if not satisfactory, the police?

I am so sorry this happened to your ds.

Anon24620197 · 03/07/2021 20:08

My son said he came behind him and wasn't expecting it. The boy in question is a lot taller than him. The parent who told me Said their child said you could see my son had no idea it was going yo happen

you can still screen record or screen shot on Snapchat, but it will show the person posting that someone has done so, I don’t have snap chat anymore but I’m fairly certain you can watch someone’s story more than once too so the screen recording should be do-able

FlannelandPuce · 03/07/2021 20:30

Don't mess around go straight to police. This is not acceptable if it was an adult let alone a child and if someone filmed the beginning of the attack it was premeditated. So sorry this has happened to your son x

A similar, very horrible incident happened at the school where I work. School took this very seriously and the boys responsible have been permanently excluded. Definitely inform school and if they try to brush it off go to the police.

Really? My son didn't want me to make too much fuss the other day and told me everyone makes mistakes and wanted them to be forgiven. He takes things out of context sometimes and doesn't know how things are meant. He's been happy since and said nothing else has gone on. The school said the boy was mortified he had to be spoken to. We had no idea it was filmed at the time or even worse filmed!! This now makes it completely different for me.

Sorry? Some of that didn't make sense. Feel really upset about it. What I'm basically saying is when we reported it, we had no idea it had been filmed. Now, knowing this makes it completely different for me and to think its been circulated around snap chat. My son has no idea. He doesn't put anything personal on fb, not even his face.

So I've just seen Snapchat holds on to videos for 30days so I guess the video can be found.

@Anon24620197 yes absolutely. The filming showed it was premeditated and not just ‘boys having a fight’. It was a very serious incident. The boys in question had been in trouble previously for other things (nothing like this). As soon as school were made aware both boys were immediately given fixed term exclusions and then permanent exclusions. They are in Pupil referral units now. This is a naice school and we’d never had anything quite like this happen before but school dealt with it in the most serious way possible. Please do go back to your school.

GreenTeaPingPong · 03/07/2021 22:44

The school will definitely want to know about this. Please report to them, it's quite horrific bullying.

MilduraS · 03/07/2021 23:12

This happened to a boy in my year in the mid 00's. It was pre Snapchat but when most people had just gotten video phones. The more popular boys who instigated it had a good laugh together for a couple of days but by the time they started showing off and circulating it to the wider year group, everyone turned against them. It was helped in a big part by the more popular girls shutting it down immediately. They thought they were big men so being met by "wtf is wrong with you? Wtf are you sharing this? Are you proud of yourself or something?" from the most popular girls put them in their place.

I'd tell the school ASAP but have faith that most kids at school aren't enjoying watching it or having a laugh at your sons expense.

cupcakecourageous · 03/07/2021 23:32

If the video is circulating after all this time it's because it's been screen recorded and being replayed and resent.

I'd go to the police to be honest - I don't think the school has dealt with the matter effectively if the little shits are still brazen enough to be sharing the video.

So what I can work out is that this child saw the video last week, but the parent said she wanted to see me in person to tell me(our other children go go clubs together) so it seems it hasn't circulated since the boy had a talking to. However I didn't know it was being filmed. I assumed maybe it was boys messing about which actually isn't funny if you're not that type of child. I said to the school that my son was unaware this was going to happen, there has been previous verbal bullying from this child and this child is physically huge compared to my son. The school were excellent in the way they dealt with it and no more problems since. However we were not aware it was being filmed and circulated which now puts a different spin on it and maybe a quiet word with the child was NOT the right thing to do. I'm very unhappy all these kids have seen this video, been sharing it without even my son aware. My dh said its premeditated assault? Plus the boy who filmed must have thought he got off Scott free, plus apparently there were kids stood around laughing :-(

Yes, we understand what has happened. Go back to the school about this new information or go to the police.

tensmum1964 · 06/07/2021 14:02

Definitely go to the Police. Young kids need to know that there are repercussions for this disgusting behaviour.
