Did I answer this interview question stupidly?

He asked me what were my salary expectations. Probably a standard question but I’ve never been asked that before so it did throw me.

I just stated that it’s the grade above me (internal role) and from what I would assume the pay is higher and I would expect it to be around ££££ (I underestimated by around £2K)

Was the stupid? I feel I shouldn’t have said an actual amount/

I think what you said sounds fine, when asked by recruiters I've always said actual amounts.
