Is scratching the paint on a car classed as an accident?

DD has just scratched the paint on a car next to us in the carpark with the door of our car. What's the right thing to do?

We're in a hurry, if I put my name & number on a piece of paper under the windscreen is that enough? It's not classed as an accident - is it?

Am I overthinking this?!

Take a photo of the damage and leave a note with your phone number

If you leave your name and number you'd be doing a lot more than most people bother to do. Most people wallop your car door with theirs and leave!!! Not classed as an accident I wouldn't think.

Ok, done, thanks. Good idea about the photo.

DH scraped and slightly dented a car in a carpark. Inevitably it was a big expensive one, because Sod’s law. He left a note with his number and three weeks later we got a call from a rozzer! Turns out that the driver couldn’t read his appalling handwriting, so got a “not available” number and then handed the note over to the police. Cop looked at it again, thought “maybe that’s a 6, not an 8”, tried again and got through to us.

The lessons from this story are
A) at no point did the cop suggest that DH had done anything wrong by leaving a note and driving off
B) if you’re going to leave a note make it legible Hmm
C) according to cop people who’ve been spotted scraping a car in a busy carpark will frequently leave a note saying “ha, ha, those suckers looking at me think I’m leaving my number!”
