Going on a week long UK holiday tomorrow. What little extras could we take?

We're staying in a cottage, should be fairly well equipped. Have a fair amount of room in the car. Am I mad to think of taking the cool box and a few bits from my own kitchen? I've already packed a couple of tea towels as holiday cottages usually only give you one which is supposed to last all week (ick).

What else would you take that isn't clothes and toiletries?

Don't forget the chargers for your phone and tablets!!!

WisestIsShe · 02/07/2021 17:51

No idea but following for good ideas.

YouLookSoCool · 02/07/2021 17:51

If I had them at home I'd take bread, milk, margarine, cereal, jam, tea bags, coffee - to save you having to buy these immediately on arrival.
Also a few dishwasher tablets and clothes washing tabs and maybe a dishcloth/scourer. Often these are supplied but not always.

Quornflakegirl · 02/07/2021 17:52

I take my good frying pan, fairy washing up liquid, a good sharp knife for cooking, ice packs, hand wash and 2 hand towels for the bathroom.

OMGisthisforreal · 02/07/2021 17:54

Decent kitchen prep knives
Plug extension lead - there are never enough sockets where you want them
Any kitchen sponges scouters or wipes, whatever you like to use as they supply the minimum to be thrown out after you leave
Just look around and see what you use on a daily basis and you can bring it all back.
As soon as I get to my s/c I unpack my kitchen and tech charging stuff and take a photo so I don’t leave anything behind when I leave.
Have a lovely holiday!

KenAdams · 02/07/2021 17:54

Slow cooker (only to throw in some jackets or something if we're remote so that they're ready when we come on from a long walk) and coffee machine. Oh and a good knife, the accommodation ones are always rubbish.

Mull · 02/07/2021 17:54

I’d take board games and a pack of cards. DS has recently got into chess so we’ve got a little travel set that I’d take.

A good knife is a great idea. Nothing worse than a shit knife!

Raera · 02/07/2021 17:55

Always take my cooking knives. Any cooking sauces flavourings you use regularly. Mozzie spray.
Folding chairs or blanket for picnics (so cool box is a good idea)

yupyupyup · 02/07/2021 17:55

I always take a few extra bin bags. Some places only give you 1 or 2. We go thru about 1 per day on holiday. Also, your favourite sharp knives. Knives are never sharp enough in holiday lets!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 02/07/2021 17:57

We take decent knives because most holiday let's don't understand the concept of a sharp knife. Then we take a box of kitchen basics Inc oil, herbs and spices etc. Some laundry detergent, dishwasher tablets, dish cloths because you often only get one sponge.

Depends if you plan to cook or eat out really.

When holidays were done on more of a budget we would take all the cupboard basics like rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes, cereals etc. These days we push the boat out and go to the supermarket and let the kids buy coco pops and choose 1 meal size (500g) packs of posh pasta.

Indoorcamping · 02/07/2021 17:57

If you're cooking from scratch; herbs, spices, salt, pepper, oil, stock cubes. It's a pain having to pick up every little thing you need for a meal.

SunshineThelma · 02/07/2021 18:02

I take my own caffetiere whenever we go somewhere in the UK

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/07/2021 18:03

We take decent sized mugs, pint glasses, and plastic cups if there's a garden or outdoor area.
Hair dryer.

A lamp if you are one of those people that can't stand the 'big light' on in the evenings.

Scottishskifun · 02/07/2021 18:05

We usually take a cool bag and food for the first day or two so we don't have to stress about getting to a supermarket!

I also take a little bags of herbs, stock cubes, salt and pepper and oil.

Oh and a sharp knife! The ones in self catering are always rubbish!

Topbird29 · 02/07/2021 18:10

Knife sharpener. Oven mitt. Bottle opener. Sandwich bags - useful for picnics. Pegs. Extra games for possible rainy days and playing once kids in bed x

ShipshapeShore · 02/07/2021 18:14

I like to take a blanket as sometimes it can get chilly in the evenings!

muddledmidget · 02/07/2021 18:16

My essentials for self catering are salt, pepper, vinegar, ketchup, tea, coffee. Plus knives, tin opener and tea towels. Definitely slippers and a dressing gown, and double check whether it's a bath or shower, and pack posh bubble bath or shower oil.

FizzyPink · 02/07/2021 18:19

Card games
Bubble bath if there’s a nice bath where you’re staying
Nice candles/fairy lights for the evenings
If you drink, a couple of bottles of whatever you fancy to pop in the fridge when you arrive

Knittedfairies · 02/07/2021 18:24

Check the details of your cottage again; the one we stayed in a month ago had stopped supplying towels and pillows due to coronavirus.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 02/07/2021 18:26

Placemarking for my holiday.

redfairy · 02/07/2021 19:03

Scented candle because often accommodation smells a bit weird. Decent sized mugs because I can't be doing with those poxy self catering cups. can opener in case I can't use the contraptions in the kitchen drawer.

Standrewsschool · 02/07/2021 19:08

Enough food for first 24hours

Coathangers - holiday places never have enough
Tea towels
Washing. -up sponge
A few dishwater tablets
Washing up liquid

AnaViaSalamanca · 02/07/2021 19:31

Blanket/shawl
Slippers
Power bank
Hair dryer - I have thick long hair and usually what they provide is not powerful enough, or gets too hot.

PaulaPennyfeather · 02/07/2021 19:32

Umbrellas
Cagoules
Wellington boots

Etc etc

Onthegrid · 02/07/2021 19:38

We are off to a self catered cottage shortly, will be menu planning as we do now and taking the food with me, I don’t like wasting time going to Tesco when I’m at home so I’m not doing it on holiday. We will eat 1 meal a day out but the rest will be made by us. When we go overseas there is fun going to the shops but not here.

What else
My own very large bath towel
My pillow
My hairdryer
Tea towels
Kitchen knife or 2
I want to take the coffee machine BUT youngest DC will be home and may kick up a fuss
DH will pack his tea bags and a mug
