Going on a week long UK holiday tomorrow. What little extras could we take?

We're staying in a cottage, should be fairly well equipped. Have a fair amount of room in the car. Am I mad to think of taking the cool box and a few bits from my own kitchen? I've already packed a couple of tea towels as holiday cottages usually only give you one which is supposed to last all week (ick).

What else would you take that isn't clothes and toiletries?

We take loads too.

Tea of various sorts
Coffee and cafetière
Sugar
Muesli
Butter
Condiments
Chocolate
Peanuts
Beer and wine
Everything else that’s in the fridge and bread bin that will go off before we’re back.
Insulated water bottles
Kitchen roll
Tupperware and silicone bags for storage & picnics
Couple of decent knives
Frozen home made “ready meals” for a couple of nights. I prefer not to shop unless we have to.
Pasta, rice etc. for the above
Own pillows
Slippers
Dressing gown/loungewear pullover
Work laptop…Hmm
DVDs

I have also been known to take my sewing machine, huge quantities of old photos to sort out, and tomorrow we’ll probably be taking the massage table so I can iron out DH’s poor back between hikes.

I kind of want to take the bread maker but that is just silly.

Plasters, savlon, antihistamine cream, phone, kindle, chargers, bank cards, pen and paper, playing cards, roll of little plastic bags
Anniecott

I used to meal plan and take it all with me as I didn't want to be spending too much time in a supermarket on holiday
Oh my you're organised, can you be my Yoda please?( horrendous cook and very disorganized person here!)

I think the cool box is a good idea as it means you can bring food back home with you rather than chucking it too - also handy for day trips

Can opener and bottle opener!

@Alannawhorideslikeaman

Can opener and bottle opener!
I'd be seriously pissed off if I stayed somewhere and they didn't have those provided!

Own pillowcase, bedsheets, towels, flannels - especially now during covid.
Good stash of tea towels, cleaning cloths. Nothing worse than using dubious tea towels!
Antibac wipes and hand gel
Slippers
Comfiest PJs
A nice shower gel and body lotion
Selection of nice snacks at least for the first day.
If you have room, a set of tupperware for picnics or leftovers.
Something for laundry -a bin liner for each person works well.

@hopeishere I've stayed in lots without a bottle opener (or at least a corkscrew!) and plenty with a poor excuse for a tin opener. I don't think we stay in particularly poor quality accomodation either (in fact, I know we don't). Maybe we've just hit the poor luck lottery with those two items. We usually end up with one or the other so now I just take both!

Wet weather gear.

I always take my mug, my pillow and slippers.
Slow cooker (only to throw in some jackets or something if we're remote so that they're ready when we come on from a long walk)
Can you cook baked potatoes in the slow cooker? Instructions please!

Turn on cooker, put potatoes in, leave for many hours. No crispy skin but they are nice and chewy where they touch the sides so pip them up against the side whenever possible.

Sockets are often in inaccessible places.

As well as phone etc charge cables I would take a a multi gang extension lead, something like this

Deal: PIBEEX Extension Lead with USB, 13A Power Strip 4 Way Outlets 4 USB 5V 3.4A Surge Protection 1.6M Extension cord Power Adapter UK Socket for Home Office https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08FT2XK73/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcdllPG9QAN9RKWAYXGVP5AFR

Plug it into one socket and then you have somewhere convenient to plug in all your chargers. I'd always take one, especially abroad it means that you only need one conversion plus to have a load of sockets.

We have one with US and with EU sockets in the spare room for visitors. People often remark how useful it is.

Things that we always need when self catering : oven gloves (our last had nothing at all to remove hot things from the oven), washing up stuff, foil, oil, salt/pepper, kitchen roll, tea, coffee, sugar and kitchen knives. Also coat hangers, carrier bags, and we take a couple of bottles of wine with a corkscrew if needed. Usually take extra towels as well because they never provide enough i.e. I use one for body and one for hair. I wish I had taken a throw or blanket last time as despite the weather being glorious it was still chilly in the evening.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 03/07/2021 15:12
