Going on a week long UK holiday tomorrow. What little extras could we take?

We're staying in a cottage, should be fairly well equipped. Have a fair amount of room in the car. Am I mad to think of taking the cool box and a few bits from my own kitchen? I've already packed a couple of tea towels as holiday cottages usually only give you one which is supposed to last all week (ick).

What else would you take that isn't clothes and toiletries?

A sharp knife, non stick frying pan and a decent can opener - all normally rubbish in cottages. Oil, I wont get through a full bottle in a week and it annoys me to buy one. Butter - take one if it's half used already. Salt. Dish sponge, washing up liquid. Few containers in case we want to take a picnic out. Cool bag. Spare bin bags, useful for bringing dirty clothes home. Oven mitt if you plan to use the oven.

If you like a boiled/poached egg they rarely have egg cups or a poacher. Our last place had no strainer.

Wow, people bring a lot. Only just stopping short of the kitchen sink Shock

PerciphonePuma · 02/07/2021 20:12

Salt! Potentially pepper too. Condiments if you use them.

hopeishere · 02/07/2021 21:17

Really nice bubble bath and stuff for a facial
Books
Wine

Loads of food - try to bring stuff that is running out so we don't bring it home. I hate cooking so we do lots of ready meals.

Slippers
Hot water bottle

I used to meal plan and take it all with me as I didn't want to be spending too much time in a supermarket on holiday but now I get my Tesco shop delivered straight to the cottage, saves space in the car. I nearly came unstuck with this last week though as our 4 and 1/2 journey turned into a 9 hr one due to roadworks and an accident on the motorway, so we weren't going to be at the cottage in time, luckily we had a lovely cottage owner who went there and waited for our shopping for us. We always empty the fridge at home to take with us, ketchup, Mayo , salad cream, brown sauce etc, salt, vinegar, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid , scouter, j cloths, anti bac wipes. Dressing gown, bulky but so comfortable and pillows are a must along with tbags. Also order online shop to be delivered day we arrive.

SkiingIsHeaven · 02/07/2021 23:22

Yorkshire teabags. You don't need anything else to have a good holiday.

thelastgoldeneagle · 02/07/2021 23:24

I do a track order to arrive just after we do. Include handwash in the order. Plus I take tea towels, games, cards, painting stuff, beach toys, washing powder and dishwasher tabs.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 02/07/2021 23:24

Well not something in the car, but the last time we holidayed in the UK with friends, we ordered an online Sainsbury’s shop to arrive the first day and a wine order from Majestic, was fab not having to go out to get it all or carry it all with us.

thelastgoldeneagle · 02/07/2021 23:24

I certainly do. I use our roof box for the clothes in holdalls so more stuff can fit in the boot. My plug in filter coffee maker and decent coffee, slow cooker, my knives, extra TP and bin liners, my pillow, wifi extender/booster, loaded Fire stick.

Also do a shopping order to be delivered the evening we arrive.

HazyDaisy123456 · 02/07/2021 23:48

When our dcs were small we took fold up stair gate, black out blinds and tie on chair/ seats instead of high chairs (we also use lid these when out and about).

Definitely a fan! I need a lot of white noise to sleep. I have a Vornado for extra loud white noise.
Juice9000 · 03/07/2021 00:08

First aid kit

I don’t take pillows, just cases that I put over the top.

Sometimes there’s no radio

Bag clips

Spare plastic bags/bin liners e.g for dirty washing

Tin foil to cover the inevitably manky baking tray

Kayemm · 03/07/2021 00:11

Ice cube trays. There is never enough ice Gin

Whatifitallgoesright · 03/07/2021 00:15

Take everything. Absolutely fucking everything. Leave at least three things behind which aren't family members.

BashfulClam · 03/07/2021 00:16

I take a plastic sandwich bag for the tv remote as they are always minting and hard to clean.

Lovelydiscusfish · 03/07/2021 05:04

Tea and coffee
Condiments
Stock Cubes
Herbs etc
Olive oil
Balsamic
Marmite/jams etc.
Kitchen roll.
Clingfilm

(If there’s room in the car obviously).

Tupperware and stuff like that if you might go on picnics?

Disposable BBQs.

garlictwist · 03/07/2021 05:41

I always take my massive sports direct mug everywhere I go as I find holiday house mugs are rarely very big.
