Urgh urgh urgh. Found this in the middle of the living room this morning. Obviously exterminators are going to be called as soon as is reasonable. Is it a rat or a mouse? Child’s Farm Detangler shown for size reference.

No idea what it is. But was it just a random dead mouse/rat on the floor? Or do you have a cat?

OrchidLass · 02/07/2021 06:25

That's a rat I'm afraid, mice are pretty tiny.

JazzleRazzle · 02/07/2021 06:26

Looks like a small (young) rat to me. You can tell from the tail.,if the tail has very little fur on it then it is a rat.

Hfjshdhs · 02/07/2021 06:27

We live in a very old house and have had mice before. There are traps down. But it is very weird.

Rat, sorry

JazzleRazzle · 02/07/2021 06:27

If you have a cat it has most likely just killed it brought it in from outside. Does not mean you have a problem.

Starryskiesinthesky · 02/07/2021 06:28

Rat 🐀

Hfjshdhs · 02/07/2021 06:29

We don’t have a cat

I'll get slatednfir saying this on MN because the general consensus is that you should let the rats take over your house or you kill the innocent cats....or something....but f* those traps. You need good old fashioned poison. Lots of it. And block up any holes where they might get in.

wjg65ka · 02/07/2021 06:35

Ooo that's a rat.

I live off a canal, train track and right by the docks so these are a common occurrence in my yard. Been lucky never to have one come in though

bunnybuggs · 02/07/2021 06:37

young rat - do you have a pond in your garden - if you live rurally or near a farm rats can be a persistent problem and they are attracted to water/ponds/canals/rivers.
Agree with poison in an enclosed rat poison container and look out for droppings to see where they run or enter the house.
Alternatively =- get in a rat catcher.

GerundTheBehemoth · 02/07/2021 06:38

It's a wood mouse (or yellow-necked mouse - need to see the throat area to tell). Brown rats and house mice are a greyer shade of brown and don't have clean-cut white bellies.

Hfjshdhs · 02/07/2021 06:40

We are central London, not rural at all. I’m just so upset. We have young kids. My husband is going away for the weekend today and is leaving me with a potential rat problem to deal with.

I once had a mouse just saunter in through the patio doors . It didn’t even run when it saw me . The pest control guy said it was someone else’s mouse that had been poisoned and that’s why it was so slow .

headintheproverbial · 02/07/2021 06:42

How is it there in the middle of the floor? Did your cat bring it in?

Don't panic. It's a grim problem but not unusual. Call the exterminators and you'll be fine.

BonnyEm · 02/07/2021 06:50

Rats tails are thicker at the body and get thinner at the tip. The face looks like a mouse too.
It's a mouse, a big one. Not a baby rat.

Trinacham · 02/07/2021 06:51

That's a mouse. I work with rats and mice so I know for sure. Weird how everyone else said rat, but it's a mouse.

Hfjshdhs · 02/07/2021 06:53

Ok thank you so so much to those saying it’s a mouse. I can cope with that. I’m not sure if I am particularly not resilient but I’m so upset about this.

Randomdogbite · 02/07/2021 06:53

Mouse! We have pets that look the same!

Hfjshdhs · 02/07/2021 06:54

Thank you @Trinacham

My thought is mouse.
Have you seen any droppings?
Mouse poo is like grains of wild rice and rat poo much bigger.
I've had rats and mice indoors over the years.
Have you got a cat or dog who may have brought it in?
The very first thing you need to do is check over any stored food and make sure any dried food, cereal etc are in solid containers.
If there is no food damage you haven't necessarily got a big problem and you could be lucky.

TheVampiresWife · 02/07/2021 07:03

Definitely a mouse, OP.

Definitely a mouse (I've worked with them as a conservationist).

Ohshittt · 02/07/2021 07:05

I was sure it was a mouse as well!

AliceW89 · 02/07/2021 07:07

Certain that’s a mouse you know and not a rat. I’m no expert but it looks identical to the ones that took over my DF+DSM’s garage…
