Urgh urgh urgh. Found this in the middle of the living room this morning. Obviously exterminators are going to be called as soon as is reasonable. Is it a rat or a mouse? Child’s Farm Detangler shown for size reference.

If you use poison, it melts the mouse from the inside, they swell up and bumble about. They they die secretly for you to smell for months. If you use old fashioned traps they die instantly. Just then pop in the bin. You could also buy the noise emitters which you plug in. I lived in Amsterdam and had so many mice, and the plug ins worked.

StormcloakNord · 02/07/2021 09:35

Not sure where other posters are getting rat from?

It's 100% a mouse.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/07/2021 09:40

A rat is totally different to a mouse. It’s not the same at all.

OP’s rodent is a mouse. I’m guessing people don’t see mice frequently.

BountyIsUnderrated · 02/07/2021 09:40

Look at the ears, those are mouse ears not rat ears.
Clearly a well fed mouse.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/07/2021 09:44

That's a mouse.

Snappy traps, poison and block all holes, put all food away.

It was probably already poisoned and that's why it died in the middle of your room!!

VettiyaIruken · 02/07/2021 09:46

Mouse.
Face shape is wrong for a rat.

ppeatfruit · 02/07/2021 09:49

MrsPell They eat soap!!! We aren't the tidiest people (middling I suppose) . They don't go for food, they have gone for soap downstairs too!

Hallyup6 · 02/07/2021 09:51

Definitely a mouse. I've kept both mice and rats as pets and know the difference. We also had mice in our old house that were coming in through holes behind the kitchen units. Plenty of expanding foam and wire wool, snappy traps with peanut butter and a (un)willing husband dealt with it. We caught about 10 before we saw no more.

A mouse. They aren't so bad except they wee everywhere. You can get humane traps. You need to find the source. If you have decking there could be a nest.

Ifitquacks · 02/07/2021 09:56

These pictures are making me physically shudder Envy (not envy).
It’s a mouse OP.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/07/2021 10:03

Am I weirdo because if I found a,mouse or rat in my house I'd want to snuggle it and keep it as a pet. Grin.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/07/2021 10:07

Oh is he dead. I thought he was asleep. BlushGrin

Nothingyet · 02/07/2021 10:39

Mouse 100%

DriverOrDiver · 02/07/2021 10:40

If you are squeamish, have small children and are willing to throw money at the problem then the electric mouse traps are spendy but v good. I caught loads with ours. A little light flashes when you’ve caught one and you just tip it out into the bin. You can reuse the same bait most of the time as they don’t get as far as eating it.

😂😂😂
DriverOrDiver · 02/07/2021 10:42

And yes speak to your neighbours if your houses are joined. It may be they have poison down already anyway (which would explain this dead one expiring in the middle of the room).

Heronatemygoldfish · 02/07/2021 10:50

Mouse.

We get both brought in by the cats. This is a large mouse and so is yours.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/07/2021 10:51

OP I feel your pain. Ive had to deal with rodent issues a few times, once a pretty serious rat infestation that still haunts me. I feel 🤮 even writing it.

However, I see you are getting professionals in so that is absolutely the right thing to do. I guarantee you'll feel much better once they've been. It is so routine for them, and they'll have it sorted quickly.

While that's a 🐭 you still want it sorted.

PP about poison aren't talking about professional pest controllers. In my case, they used boxes with poison which they came back to check & remove. No half-poisoned rodents wandering around.

Also, re holes ... pest controllers I used said they can get in anywhere eg the small gap at the back door for example. It's basically impossible to block all these points. But they will give you good advice on remedies / approaches.

You'll feel much better in a while!

Heronatemygoldfish · 02/07/2021 10:51

Sorry my image didn't post, or hasn't as yet.

AriadnetheSpider · 02/07/2021 10:57

I’d say it’s a mouse, doesn’t look anything like a rat to me (we have rats in the garden so unfortunately I am quite familiar with what they look like 🤢)

RomComPhooey · 02/07/2021 10:58

We had rats in our house about 15 years ago. The good news is that if you have mice, you don’t have rats - the rats outcompete the mice. Or so the exterminator told me.

MissM2912 · 02/07/2021 11:07

You need to get a cat. I live in a big old house surrounded by fields- two cats, not a rodent in sight.

Lazierdays · 02/07/2021 11:29

It’s a mouse. Pretty harmless, although of course can chew things and cause destruction.
Please don’t use poison it is a horrific death and they can take it back to their nests outside and affect the whole food chain, such as large birds and including killing pet cats. I’ve known that happen it’s not unheard of at all.
My mum lives rurally and has trapped and rehomed mice a couple of times. They are just trying to live their lives and don’t carry disease or want to harm you 🤷‍♀️.

Justilou1 · 02/07/2021 11:36

Argh! Who cares? It’s a rodent and you have to burn the house down immediately!
