Get an earlier driving test

Just in case this is helpful to anyone! My son failed his test on 11 June. We rebooked straight away and earliest was 16 Nov which he booked. He then registered with the website and app in the photos, about £20 each. They ping the DVSA database every 5 mins for cancellations (so two will ping at different times increasing your options). Between the 2 we got offered around 6 increasingly earlier cancellations and decided to keep searching till we got August. Less than 24 hours after rebooking we got 1 July (thankfully he passed today). You need your settings to auto accept what is offered or you’ll miss it. Once it finds an earlier date and auto accepts it stops searching but if you want to keep trying, you reactivate (all for the same fee) and it keeps on searching. So book anywhere but set your cancellation search to only your chosen test centre(s). It updates the DVSA for you.

My son is starting an apprenticeship in August and being able to drive there is 30 mins whereas public transport is 3 trains and foot because of awkward location. So whilst it’s more money spent, this service has been a lifesaver.

Brilliant timing, DS and I were literally discussing this earlier and I suggested he research a good app! Thanks OP!

blahblahblah321 · 01/07/2021 11:56

Oh also congratulations to your son!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/07/2021 11:57

DS1 used similar, possibly the same.

failed 1st test on 28th May, got next test on 4 Nov.
but then through one of those apps managed to get an earlier date - it's tomorrow!!!
eek!

@Showgurn
thanks! I'll be a nervous wreck...

Congrats on the success, well done your son!!

Showgurn · 01/07/2021 12:10

I have been unnecessarily anxious about this @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba, it’s really got to me! But the high level of anxiety has convinced me it’s time for HRT so it’s given me a push. Fingers crossed for you tomorrow

Excellent, but out of reach price wise for my son.

grafittiartist · 01/07/2021 12:41

V helpful thank you!!

Showgurn · 01/07/2021 17:20

My son’s girlfriend has been unable to book anything at her chosen test centre, literally nothing offered this year so this afternoon booked another random centre for december and now has a cancellation at her chosen centre for September, which suits her fine

My DD has just failed hers (mainly nerves, though having to drive on a dual carriageway with the windows open and rain coming in didn't help!) and we can't seem to find anything at all to book again to be able to then use the app for cancellations. She needs her car for work really, her original test date was supposed to be February and at the moment I'm having to take her and pick her up, sometimes two hours driving a day, so it's a bit of a nightmare for me too.

Any ideas anyone how to actually find a test anywhere to begin with? The official driving test site seems really clunky. Then presume the app will let us move test centres as well as dates so we don't end up having to go to the outer Hebrides or anything!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/07/2021 10:28

@Showgurn

just an update that unfortunately he failed again. so annoying.
he's back on the app/s

TabbyStar · 03/07/2021 10:33

Answered my own question, this site helped us find one an hour away in November in case that helps anyone else! www.driving-test-cancellations-4all.co.uk/

Ah I’m sorry @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba, it’s such a fine line. My lad got of one type of minor (going too slow), a 4th and he’d have failed. It’s tough. Good luck with the next one!

blahblahblah321 · 03/07/2021 13:41

Ah sorry Zing Sad

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/07/2021 13:47

thank you both

apparently he didn't break quickly enoug and the tester dude had to break - well about 0.1 sec before him!
DS1 said he was already the pressing the break but the dude had just done it - automatic fail.🙄🤷‍♀️

I guess I have to side with the dude because
a, I wasn't there
b, it's on his head if he gives out a license to someone that's not ready

my heart still says😭😭😭😭😭 my poor baby was wronged 🤣🤣

TabbyStar · 03/07/2021 15:12

It's so difficult for them, coping with mask and glasses, and windows wide open in the rain on a dual carriageway, and having a strange man staring at her (!) just overwhelmed DD and she didn't notice a speed change sign down 10mph (when the cars in front of her weren't taking any notice either!) and she was 5mph over. I can understand why she failed, but it is a lot more challenging at the moment I think.

Showgurn · 03/07/2021 15:58

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba that’s exactly what my lad failed for first time. He had the brake covered so was also a bit peeved. Third time lucky 🍀

@showgurn Thank you for this, I've just downloaded the second one (red app).
Can I just ask please, it doesn't seem to let me select the dates and I don't want it too early! If it booked within three days, can I still change it? I know you can't cancel on the actual DVSA website that close without losing money.
Should I just not bother with auto book? Would it then send me a notification and then I would book it myself? Thanks Smile

wizbit93 · 19/07/2021 19:22

Forget that, it seems to be working now Smile
