My neighbour was very security conscious. She used to have a wall and a high hedge, plus a high gate that she would padlock every night.
She’s recently had the hedge and the wall taken away and replaced with a tiny wall at the front. You can step over it with one step, which is what everyone does, no one uses the gate anymore.
She still goes out every single night, and padlocks the gate and then unpadlocks it every morning.
She’s a difficult character so you couldn’t ask her (also if she forgets until late it’s a noisy thing to do). It makes me shake my head every day
