Gap closing all 81 stores

Just that really. Feel for the staff. Another high street brand disappearing to online

I shop every so often in their outlet store (no regular store near me) and it’s good for basic T shirts

It's so difficult to buy clothes on-line. Terrible news

DaisyDreaming · 01/07/2021 00:15

Disney stores are all going too. So so many jobs lost

Excited101 · 01/07/2021 00:24

Oh no what a shame!!

Terrible news about all the closures. I was gutted about Disney going. Spent many hours in there with the kids and the staff were always so lovely 😢

musicalfrog · 01/07/2021 00:31

Gutted. I hate shopping online so doubt I'll bother. I used to love the kids stuff in particular.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 01/07/2021 00:34

the first thing I've ever bought for my kids was a set of 7 Gap baby socks on the day of 1st scan with DS1.
20 y later I still have most of the socks and even the box.

I love Gap & will be sad to see it go.
terrible news for their staff.

BiarritzCrackers · 01/07/2021 00:40

Awful for their staff, annoying for customers, and another loss for towns/cities. I buy Gap jeans quite a lot, and I do like to be able to try them on. I really think I might not buy from shops any longer that don't maintain a physical presence, as my form of protest against closures!

Farinaz · 01/07/2021 00:47

I think that’s the issue. There aren’t a lot of appealing items and the store design isn’t great either.

SorrySoldOut · 01/07/2021 00:50

Nothing in there worth buying though, it’s all so wish washy and dull

There’s not much of a market for it. And overpriced

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 01/07/2021 01:20

I've been thinking that too @BiarritzCrackers

PerciphonePuma · 01/07/2021 03:16

Disney stores???? Shock But..... Oh that's such a bloody shame. I have fond memories of going in and being tempted to jump into the huge pyramid of soft toys then buying an oversized Winnie the Pooh mug. My little girl will miss out on the fun of actually seeing all things Disney in one place.
How will the brand remain recognisable & mainstream in the UK if all we have is the DVDs on a shelf in the supermarket etc?
Disney was a part of every kid's life when I was growing up

PerciphonePuma · 01/07/2021 03:19

It's her one & only visit to a Disney store and buying a Mickey Mouse play set, that led my DD to begin watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and to then start asking to go to Disney World! She'd never heard of any of it before

Leshan · 01/07/2021 03:56

Not surprised.
Most of their shops have too little variety of clothing and they've been flogging the same old hoodies with GAP written across the chest since I was in uni, decades ago.
They have so many sales all year round that they've merely trained their customers to wait for those and never pay full price for anything.
GAP shipped out of Hong Kong last year and I fully expect them to shut up shop globally soon.
I do like GAP though and I always buy a few bits in there each year.

Onesailwait · 01/07/2021 04:01

I'm not surprised, their stuff is really over priced and not very inspiring. I picked up a few bits for the kids in the sale & the quality was on par with H&m.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/07/2021 04:04

They haven't put any effort into their UK stores since some time in the last decade, so it isn't a surprise, though I feel sorry for their staff. Used to be a go-to place for several items for holidays every year then one year the quality of the cotton seemed to drop off a cliff and never came back. Also they got absolutely slated for their supply chain and working practices for those who make the garments.

Treehaus · 01/07/2021 04:05

I do wonder what will replace shops on the High Street, if anything. Many happy hours window shopping and having lunch with friends when a teen.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/07/2021 04:14

There will still be shops, smaller individual ones which provide a more pleasant shopping experience. I always hated chain store shopping and spending hours traipsing around trying to find clothes.

groundcontroltomontydon · 01/07/2021 05:28

That's sad news - I like their jeans and they used to sell the best long-line fitted t shirts. Their website is awful and never seems to have my size in stock.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/07/2021 06:09

GAP haven't been what they used to be for a long time. I used to buy loads there but the last few years nothing appealed, they got really expensive, to accommodate the endless discounts and their stores were a mess.

Tigresswoods · 01/07/2021 06:16

Does anyone else remember in the late 90s when GAP's USP was their amazing customer service. The staff would bend over backwards to help you. It was really different to other shops.

It's not been like that for ages. I'll miss GAP.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 01/07/2021 07:15

What did we think would happen by closing down the economy for a year and getting us all hooked on Amazon?

3 million people employed in retail, pretty much none of them or their customers of an age where they would be worried about Covid. (Yes pensioners visit the supermarket, less so The Gap.)

Wonder if more people will start to question the trade off as the bill becomes due?

TheChosenTwo · 01/07/2021 07:21

I personally won’t miss it for myself, don’t think I’ve bought anything for myself in there in over 15 years and before that I think I only ever bought myself a skirt and a dress or something.
What I will miss is the baby clothes and kids pyjamas but if it’s still online that will be fine for me.
Feel terrible for those whose jobs have gone though, it’s never nice but the writing is on the wall for so many high street retailers Sad

VenusStarr · 01/07/2021 09:20

I like the GAP outlet shops and I'll miss them. I wouldn't buy their stuff online though, I don't buy any clothes online actually, so my pool is getting smaller!

Really sad about the Disney store too.

Mickarooni · 01/07/2021 09:38

Gutted to see all the high street stores closing down. I know there were challenges prior to Covid but it seems we’ve sped up their demise. :(

lollypoppi · 01/07/2021 09:55

Sad times. I've just bought from 4 different companies online this week 3 out of 4 some stuff is being returned. 1 company I'm keeping 2 out of 4 items. Another I'm keeping about 8 out of 23. Another I'm keeping 1 of 7.

I was in gap the other day and didn't get anything but I do tend to order stuff online for my girls. Although half of it ends up going back. I'm shocked they are closing all the stores though. Thought they might keep the outlets open but they must not be doing well and cost too much as well.

I didn't know about Disney 😟 my local one didn't reopen after lockdown and I was gutted. My girls are 1 and 4 and I always get stuff in there at xmas and birthday time and sometimes inbetween if they have gd sale on. Was on holiday in the U.K. last week and town I was at had a Disney. I really miss my local one. I got 2 toys to put away for my daughter's Christmas and she picked a Moanna cup to buy. That's a sale they wouldn't have got if I hadn't been in the store.
