Are you happy with your decision?

OP posts:
Schmoana · 30/06/2021 08:35

Mustlovegin I don’t recognise what you are saying in terms of what’s on TV, I think there’s loads of choice, but thanks for explaining.

MrsFin · 30/06/2021 08:35

No, you actually can't go on holidays to Europe without having to quarantine. This wouldn't have been the case before Brexit.

You don't know that

thecatsatonthewall · 30/06/2021 08:37

@mustlovegin

Schmoana I've said we need opinions from all sides - which we don't have at the moment as everything (from films, to ads, to newspapers) is co-opted by the extreme Left and woke brigade
You'll have to explain who are the extreme left and what is the "woke" brigade? I don't think many newspapers fall into either category, unless the Morning Star paper now counts as "mainstream"
frumpety · 30/06/2021 08:37

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman But immigration has remained fairly static , net migration has seen a slight drop recently, all that has changed is where those people are coming from and the reasons for them coming. A lot of those counted in the immigration figures are coming to study.

Schmoana · 30/06/2021 08:39

It’ll be ok cos we’re getting a “brexit opportunities unit” to help think of some benefits Grin

LemonRoses · 30/06/2021 08:41

Nobody likes to admit they were wrong.
There are no benefits that are quantifiable.
There are huge problems emerging and being dismissed or hidden by Covid.
The government must be delighted we have a pandemic to cover up the chaos.

thecatsatonthewall · 30/06/2021 08:42

Considering right now, EU citizens can holiday throughout europe, i think its quite clear the UK wouldn't have faced the quarantining we do now, we'd be part of the EU vaccine passport as well.

So whilst nothing is 100%, its highly probable by now, tourism would have restarted.

Nothingyet · 30/06/2021 08:45

Why would it have been different if not for Brexit? Are you saying France would be able to control their own borders. And been forced to let us in despite sky high covid? Because it’s been said on mumsnet many times that people who voted leave were mistaken when they said Brussels sets out border policy.

For what it’s worth I voted remain, but now I regret that and wish I’d voted leave,

Why? Leaving once wasn't enough for you?
frumpety · 30/06/2021 08:56

And yet the country keeps voting in a right wing government ? How long have the Conservatives been in power now ?

MarshmallowSwede · 30/06/2021 08:59

Both my husband and I are Swedish so we cannot vote here but I can say one thing about Brexit made it very clear we did not want to live here forever. It also made it clear that we are not as welcome as we thought.

The anti immigrant sentiment is troubling for me and I honestly don’t feel welcome here anymore. We applied for settlement but we have already decided we are leaving. We are educated and have well paying careers in tech but we are going back to Stockholm ASAP. And I definitely do not want to raise my children here.

People think their anti immigrant stance is only against “certain immigrants “ and skilled migrants are not the ones you have an issue with. But we all hear what you think of non British people. “Foreigners “ said as a slur.

I don’t want to live any place that I’m not welcome and we certainly don’t feel welcome. I’m happy to go back to Sweden as I feel like there’s so much I miss about my home. It’s been hard living here and trying to get used to things so it’s like a weight being lifted that we are going home.

I’m expecting my first child and I don’t feel
comfortable giving birth here. So it’s for the best.

But I would say that Brexit has made myself
and other so called “good immigrants “ feel very unwelcome. You can’t be rabidly anti foreigner and think we won’t see it.

I have nothing against you wanting to control your immigration policy but I think there are a lot more people leaving now. A lot of Swedish people we know here are also going back to Sweden because for us there is less and less social cohesion here. At times it feels almost chaotic with your government. It’s just not a very well governed country. I am sorry, but it’s not.

If another Swede wanted to come and live I would say go and see and enjoy living. But it would be clear very soon that in comparison it’s not a very well organised or governed nation.

We came here for my husbands job. And if I had to do it all over I would come but only for a year or two max. I really wish we were not here to see the after effects of Brexit because I don’t like the UK that I see.

And yes I do have to be honest and say that our families and friends at home have a bad view of the UK and we are always being asked “what is going on over there” by them. Maybe the media is painting a picture that isn’t nice. But with many Swedes leaving it just gives a bad impression.

Andante57 · 30/06/2021 09:03

Marshmallowswede are all immigrants made to feel welcome in Sweden?

Babdoc · 30/06/2021 09:07

MarshmallowSwede, Sweden has the most racially segregated labour market in Europe, and is home to some white supremacist organisations such as Legion Wasa and the Swedish Resistance Movement.
I think you need to examine the attitudes of your own countrymen before criticising the British as being anti immigrant. The UK is one of the most integrated and multicultural countries in Europe.

Aposterhasnoname · 30/06/2021 09:08

Why? Leaving once wasn't enough for you?

Really don’t understand that comment, if I could go back and change my vote we’d still only have left once, just with one more vote to leave and one less to stay.

Theworldisfullofgs · 30/06/2021 09:09

Babdoc

And yet we booed the German national anthem yesterday.

KungFuPrincess · 30/06/2021 09:09

No I dont regret it at all

Adios2011 · 30/06/2021 09:23

This has been done so many times. Get a life!

Beckyboo123 · 30/06/2021 09:27

Yes very happy 😊

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/06/2021 09:27

MarshmallowSwede, I’m not sure Sweden is so much more foreigner-friendly than the U.K. A Swedish friend’s son recently moved from an Asian country back to Sweden, with his Asian wife and half-Asian child, who was old enough to be made very unhappy by racist and xenophobic comments at school.

And this was in Stockholm, not somewhere out in the sticks.

It would be nice to think that that child was just unlucky, but I’m not sure I’d put money on it.

A dd of mine lives in a city where a lot of European and other international professionals and academics - including her next door neighbours - are employed. A lot of the parents at Gdcs’ primary school are such people. From all I’ve ever heard, most of them are staying, and are happy to do so.

Sittingonabench · 30/06/2021 09:39

So you’re trying to conflate the Covid crisis with Brexit? I didn’t vote Brexit and these two things have nothing to do with each other. Without Covid there would not be quarantine requirements and tbh lots of people don’t think free movement between EU countries is the best idea at the moment. Brexit has positives and negatives like everything else, our vaccine programme got off to a great start which I absolutely believe wouldn’t have happened without Brexit and saved many lives. I’m not particularly happy about it but so far I do think the positives have come through while the negatives will start to become apparent.

Schmoana · 30/06/2021 10:04

Brexit did not speed up vaccines, it’s another government lie

I’m in the process of applying for a Swedish passport and thinking about applying for residency as my df is Swedish.

thecatsatonthewall · 30/06/2021 10:42

@Andante57

Marshmallowswede are all immigrants made to feel welcome in Sweden?
Is that relevant?

V large numbers of EU workers have returned home, which is why we have shortages of staff.

As for the UK being a diverse and multicultural society? what a load of crap.
Brexit was won on immigration, it always figures in the top 3 reasons and drill down and its number one.

No other country, despite being able to vote in anti EU parties has done so or chosen to leave the EU & FOM, France recently rejected the RN, a party that is to the left of the current tory party.

PaulaTrilloe · 30/06/2021 10:58

I didn't vote for COVID or for EU-exit

frg124 · 30/06/2021 11:04

Theworldisfullofgs

I understand that view** and I agree that debate is healthy. But every time I've joined in with Brexit debates, I have found some of the responses unnecessarily insulting and offensive. Completely respect that others voted Remain for their valid reasons, as did I. Many Leavers have been branded xenophobic, Little Englanders who don't have the intellect to make a rational decision. I haven't seen the same level of vitriol towards Remain voters.

For me, debating whether we're still happy with our vote from 2016 moves towards the territory of navel gazing; we have now left and, whatever your vote, we need to pull together to make the best of it for our country as a whole.

PS One bit of good news amongst the ramifications of the major changes in the post Brexit financial services industry; the LSE had its best quarter for IPOs since 2007 in 2021.

TheVanguardSix · 30/06/2021 11:06

Weren't lots of catastrophic things supposed to have happened by now?

Blink and you'll miss it. And it seems you've missed a lot.
