What odd names did you consider when pregnant and hormonal?

My eldest is in his 20s, yet I can clearly remember thinking Roy and Hugh were really strong contenders when expecting him (thankfully not for long, he wasn’t born in the 1940s or 50s when those names might have been mainstream).

So what names did you consider that now you think WTF?

Wolfie. I had a thread on here and everything and I was convinced that everyone was just being mean. DS is not called Wolfie. Nor is he called Reuben with Roo for short and a Roo theme in his nursery.

And DD isn’t called Lettice or Loveday.

ScrambledSmegs · 28/06/2021 22:30

Guinevere for a girl. Gwen for short. Unusually DH wasn't averse.

Luckily that was a short-lived passion.

@DisgruntledPelican

Ariadne. I am not sophisticated enough in manner or accent for shouting that in the playground and it sounds dreadful with my surname.
I have a relative who is absolutely obsessed with this name. She never had children herself, but it’s always her suggestion if someone is expecting a baby and the topic of names comes up!

Pollyanna for a girl. I liked Humpty for a boy. DH said no to Humpty but was onboard with Pollyanna. Thankfully we had a boy.

tinkerbellvspredator · 28/06/2021 22:33

Aubrey for a boy. Still like it, but we're not posh enough for an Aubrey Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 28/06/2021 22:33

I toyed briefly with Aeneas for a boy. Rejected it as too out-there, even for the N London area I lived in.

Just over a year later, we viewed a nursery at the same time as a mother looking to send her DS there. The boy's name was Aeneas.

@StudentPurse

Kennedy Or Nova for a girl. I LOVED Kennedy and wanted her to be nicknamed Kenny… luckily I had a boy
I have named changed for this as obviously could be outing! Umm, hellooooooo, what is wrong with the name Kennedy? My daughter is called Kennedy, used to be called Dee Dee when a toddler, later known as Kenza, but now goes by Kennie. Incidentally when I first came onto MN I wondered why so many other people had children also called DDBlush Apparently my own DF wanted to call me Despina, WTAF!
CatherineMorland · 28/06/2021 22:35

Gordon or Rufus for a boy but MIL vetoed.

Tryphena or Eustacia for a girl (Thomas Hardy fan) but fortunately I had boys.

Velvian · 28/06/2021 22:38

Ds1 had a friend called Jeffrey in toddler group, his sister was called Denise. Both unusual for toddlersGrin.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 28/06/2021 22:39

It’s pronounced something like Dunn-uka, but said very fast.

It’s not one of the better known Irish names 😂

Babyfg · 28/06/2021 22:43

I loved the idea of calling my daughter Mary. I still think it's a really pretty name but very associated with a older generations. Also the horrible rhymes (hairy, scary, lairy off the top of my head).

How on earth is this name pronounced?! Because in my head and my accent I’m reading it as ‘anus’!! 😂

@Jasmine11

Boys:Zephyr, Sylvan and Oberon. Girls: Eartha and Persephone.

We didn't use any of those names and I'm glad about that!

Persephone was also one of mine. And Xerxes for a boy!
crispsinasandwich · 28/06/2021 23:34

I still like both names

chickenyhead · 28/06/2021 23:36

Esmerelda to be shortened to Esme.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 29/06/2021 06:30

My maiden name is Leary. For a fleeting moment I had the grand idea to name my son Lear

BlueThursday · 29/06/2021 06:36

Genevieve

It’s a gorgeous, gorgeous name but I had to face the fact we live in Glasgow; it just wouldn’t work Sad

DaisyWaldron · 29/06/2021 06:37

Mine have fairly unusual names anyway, but DH vetoed Loveday and Clovis.

ThePaperDoll · 29/06/2021 06:49

I really liked Cosmo for a boy and Plum for a girl but luckily used neither. Though I still like Cosmo!

Amdone123 · 29/06/2021 06:53

I remember writing Keris Topha down. I was really taken with it.
Settled for something really traditional.

Blonchette · 29/06/2021 07:03

Girls - Clementine, Liberty, Mary.

Boys - Ralph, Albert.

Blonchette · 29/06/2021 07:09

Oh - and Blydd. I still like that one but didn’t use it as feared she’d spend her life correcting the pronunciation and/or spelling. Gave her another Welsh name which I love, which she hates, partly because she spends her life correcting the pronunciation and/or spelling … Grin

GU24Mum · 29/06/2021 07:45

Boris....... though in my defence, before BoJo was London mayor. Still a narrow escape though!

Clawdy · 29/06/2021 08:24

Fritha. I'd just read The Snow Goose, and loved the name. But it sounded odd with our surname.

Bananalanacake · 29/06/2021 08:41

I also wanted Esmeralda or Ermintrude.
