How can someone get a missed call from you when you haven't call them?

I had someone phone me on my mobile and say they had a missed call from me. I said nope as I haven't called anyone for weeks, their number came up, but wasn't in my contacts. I then checked my dialled numbers and no calls out in last 10 days.

So I don't get it. They sounded old, confused, a women, didn't ask me for anything. Would they of re entered the number on their mobile and got me by mistake? How can you get the wrong person calling back a mobile from a mobile? I felt like I was rude, but what can you say I didn't call them.

This has happened to me people have called me and said I've called them and I've also called people after they've called me- but they haven't! Scammers can clone numbers

helpmewiththisnew · 28/06/2021 17:32

I'm also suspicious about scams, but I can't get it if this was trying to be a scam? I just said nope and hung up.

chances are it was the call the other person got that was trying to scam and cloned your number

Google spoofing/spoofing attack.

I had literally 000s of people calling me saying they'd had missed calls from me

Lasted about 4 or 5 days

Why do people do this? If I have a call from a number I don’t recognise and they don’t leave a message I’m certainly not calling them back on the off chance it wasn’t just a scam or a wrong number.

A random disgruntled guy rang me several times last month insisting that I'd rang him then showed me the screen shot of my number on his missed call list. Somehow companies do clone your number

I hadn't realised this really. Should I report it to someone?

I've had a few really random ones call me too, I've not answered and googled them and they are from businesses I've not been involved with.

@helpmewiththisnew you could report it to your phone provider

Blahblah77 · 29/06/2021 22:17

I had this a couple of months ago and think my number was definitely cloned by scammers. Most people probably didn’t bother calling back but a few did, mostly because they’d been expecting other calls (“Did you want to buy my car?”). I figure maybe thousands of calls had been made looking like they came from my number but I only heard from a few of them.

It was v annoying! My phone provider initially denied anyone could have done this with my number. Then when it kept happening they sent me a new SIM to see if that fixed the problem and it seemed to (either that or the scammers just moved onto someone else’s number around the same time I got the new SIM).

I had a missed call, phoned the number and the woman said no, she had a missed call from me! She sounded really genuine and as confused as I was. Whole thing was bizarre!

Cold callers and scammers can ‘spoof’ mobile numbers, so you answer thinking it’s possibly someone you know and it’s actually Marge wanting to sell you windows.

Twinstudy · 29/06/2021 22:52

I had similar, someone called me saying they'd had a missed call from me. She seemed genuine enough and didn't ask me anything. Weirdly her number was really similar to mine but that's probably just a coincidence!

Number spoofing, where scammers make it look like they’re calling from your number is really common. It normally only lasts a short time before they move on to another number, but unfortunately aside from changing mobile number (pointless and annoying when it might never happen again, or happen again next week) your service provider can’t do anything about it, as as far as they can see no calls have been made using your number!

babblingbumblingbandofbaboons · 29/06/2021 22:59

Ofcom give a bit of detail on spoofing and what to do if you’ve been called by a spoofed number and think you’ve been a victim of fraud, but as above there’s not much you can do if it’s just someone pretending they’re calling from your number. It’s so frustrating!!
