Heeelp! Need a costume for DD

NefretForth · 27/06/2021 20:32

DD (10) is in a class production of Cats at the end of this term (I don't believe for a split second that it will actually happen, as they're bound to be sent home to isolate, but I have to behave as though it will). She needs leggings, base layers and mittens to be a ginger cat. Anyone have any ideas about where I can get them in a roughly suitable colour?!

Sorry, when I say "base layers" what I meant to type was "a long-sleeved top": I was thinking of the whole lot as base layers.

Could you get white and tie dye ginger??

NefretForth · 27/06/2021 20:35

It's a thought - will look to see if anyone does dye in the right colour.

Not sure about the mittens, but I'd think about buying white cotton leggings and t-shirt and some Dylon and fabric pens I think.

Local fabric shop

You should be able to get some leopard print leggings and you could use orange felt to make ginger stripes.
Maybe try charity shops for faux fur items?

H&M are doing some fab animal print leggings if they are any good, I'm pretty sure there is a matching top also

A link to the tops

I used these when my DC needed plain items. They are really good quality. I donated them to the school after.

Decathlon leggings, potentially a bit too orange!

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 27/06/2021 21:29

Orange leggings https://www.amazon.co.uk/Futuro-Fashion-Length-Cotton-Leggings/dp/B018ZDPS00/ref=sr1111?c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Girls%27+Socks%2C+Tights+%26+Leggings&qid=1624825581&refinements=pnnsizetwoobrowse-vebin%3A14223226031&s=clothing&sr=1-11&tsid=1730903031

Orange long sleeve tshirt https://www.amazon.co.uk/janisramone-Sleeve-Stretch-T-Shirt-School/dp/B07RQVSJ1W/ref=sr11_8?dchild=1&keywords=Orange+long+sleeve+girls&qid=1624825646&s=clothing&sr=1-8

Orange mittens seem a bit harder I'd be tempted to just use socks.

If you wanted to get fancy you could but some orange faux fur fabric and use fabric glue to attach it to the tshirt and leggings (but I probably wouldn't bother to be honest)

NEfretForth · 27/06/2021 21:44

Thanks v much for the suggestions. The orange stuff is all a bit too orange - ideally I need ochre or rust, but those don't seem to be available! Dyeing white stuff may be the most practical option.

OP posts:
NefretForth · 27/06/2021 21:45

No, I don't see me bothering to attach fur to the basics either...

I used dyed white leg warmers on both legs and arms when I costumed a dance school show.

Micemakingclothes · 27/06/2021 21:55

The year dd wanted to be a ginger cat for Halloween, I painted white basics and sewn tails, ears, and mittens. Nothing else looked right. However, I am insane when it comes to costumes. That was one of my simplest years. I mean that quite literally. Some years her costumes take me 100s of hours. I’m that person. It’s my passion, but I don’t recommend anyone join in with my hobby because it is both obsessive and expensive.

Orange is really hard. It’s all too bright. If you do go the dye or paint route, I would actually recommend starting with tan or brown basics and then adding in some rusty orange and non-metallic gold.

EduCated · 27/06/2021 21:58

Try searching for brown tie dye - New Look and other places had some stuff in kids sizes, though more expensive than the basics.

SallySycamore · 27/06/2021 22:23

You could buy orange and tie dye over it with a brown, that might look quite good.

I'd use socks or leg warmers for the mittens.

NefretForth · 28/06/2021 09:36

Quite like the idea of tie-dyeing brown over orange, that could work well.

OP posts:
SallySycamore · 28/06/2021 11:49

Just thinking, you could get away with white for the mittens, lots of ginger cats have white paws.

SavoyCabbage · 28/06/2021 14:34

Just take the middles out of old felt tip pens, put in a bowl of water and tint the orange stuff with brown so it's less orange. It will wash out but it will be fine for school plays.

WhereDidIGoNext · 28/06/2021 16:24

There must be a ginger cat onesie out there somewhere?

HelloDulling · 28/06/2021 16:29

Cut the toes out of socks for fingerless mittens.
