Dealing with a guilt complex?

I've had a guilt complex all my life. I've never done anything major and some things are from childhood, just typical kids' stuff but I still feel terrible guilt over things, even decades later. I have other mental health problems and I've just found another thing to feel guilty over. A genuine mistake. I want to tackle this before it becomes another thing to beat myself over but I don't know where to start.

I did have counselling some years ago but I didn't find it all helpful.

Does anyone else experience this and how do you deal with it?

I get this. All the things I've ever done wrong. The best way I have found to handle is is in thinking, 'I'm only human and did the best I could at the time.'

Thank you. I'll try telling myself that. It's so deep seated that it's difficult to convince myself of it but I need to try. I'm so frustrated with it. It's really affecting my quality of life.

I did read that it could also be a form of OCD. I haven't had an episode for a while but I used to recall an episode from years ago when I did something wrong. I would go into panic mode about it, really bad. Then I'd have to try and make amends or 'confess' then it wouldn't be so bad. Apparently this is OCD. Do you suffer like that? Perhaps it would be good to talk to your GP anyway about getting some help, if you explain how it's affecting your life?
