If you like Rebus on TV do you prefer the older Rebus or the younger one whose thoughts you hear?
Sorry, I am terrible on actors names
I like them both but would plump for the older one. The younger gives a darker programme which I quite like

I like Ken Stott the older one, I never think of Rebus as young so John Hannah never felt right. I love Rebus books.

DramaAlpaca · 26/06/2021 22:49

Another vote for Ken Stott. He's perfect as Rebus.

LublinToDublin · 26/06/2021 22:53

Much as I like John Hannah, Ken Stott is Rebus.

Oh Ken Stott no contest, it feels Ike settling down with an old friend. I've just started reading A song for the dark times.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 26/06/2021 22:57

He is like an old friend but strangely shaggable, or am I just odd?

It feels like a very different show with John Hannah. Ken Stott is my preferred version, but to be honest neither of them match how I would imagine Rebus.

Lesina · 26/06/2021 23:02

Ken Stott all the way. John Hannah is a great actor but way too young to play Rebus.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 26/06/2021 23:04

Ken Stott is pretty much exactly how I picture Rebus! John Hannah is too young, thin, and healthy looking. He has quite some appeal to women in the books, so your assessment may be right OPGrin

Bloody love Rebus.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 26/06/2021 23:11

He is how I imagine Rebus to be too
The younger guy makes for a totally different show

I always imagine someone like Mark Strong (but with hair) or Brendan Gleeson. Ken Stott seems too reassuring. I know that sounds weird but I can't describe it. I think it's because Dr Patience puts up with him for so long, and I imagine there has to be something quite sexy there.

ItsDinah · 26/06/2021 23:17

I like both. Hannah strikes me as being nearer the Rebus of the books, who I would not describe as cuddly.

CormoranStrike · 26/06/2021 23:19

Ken Stott really is Rebus, john Hannah is just a very good actor cast in the wrong role doing the best he can.

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 26/06/2021 23:26

Though actually, I started Rebus with the later books, where Ken Scott is perfect. But then when I went back to the earlier books Ken doesn't really fit. I think in the first book Rebus was only about 40 and there are several references to him only just starting to age/ get a bit out of shape. So maybe Ken isn't the best for the earlier stories. Not convinced John Hannah is either.

Currently working my way through the Rebus audiobooks in order while I run, so it's all rather fresh in my mind 😁

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 27/06/2021 01:15

I think, as others have said, Ken Stott is the better option but in general I prefer the books to the TV show. I was delighted to discover that the Oxford Bar is a real pub in Edinburgh - I had a pint in there last time I was in the city.

1000umbrellas · 27/06/2021 01:33

I prefer reading the books too; I always imagine Rebus looking pretty much like Ian Rankin.

SenecaFallsRedux · 27/06/2021 01:58

I starting reading the books long before I saw either TV series, and I have a different Rebus in my head. But if I have to choose, I prefer the Ken Stott series over the earlier one.

Faevern · 27/06/2021 15:10

I always feel like I’m visiting Edinburgh when I read Rebus. There are Rebus tours in Edinburgh too.

LadyEloise1 · 18/05/2024 09:58

I see Rebus tv series starts on BBC1 tonight

Deathraystare · 18/05/2024 11:01

Oooh I dunno. I think much as I like John Hannah, he is too young really.

Ken Stott's charisma, both on AND off screen, does it for me, too 😏

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 18/05/2024 14:29

What do we all think of the new Rebus?
Updated and seems good but I still would go for Ken Stott

I was recording the series but the gruesome scene with the two young drug dealers was so awful I deleted it.
Too depressing.
