The engine fell out of my car!

Had a shock yesterday when the engine fell out of my car. Thankfully we were only driving slowly at the time. The car is very old now and entering old banger territory.
I now have two options: spend several hundred pounds mending it, which is the same as what the car is worth or get a new (to me) car.

I feel guilty pushing to replace it, but after what happened and how clapped out it is, and considering that I drive my little ones around in it, AIBU?

Oh, wow! I think I'd look at the new to you option tbh. A newer car would probably be safer, I imagine, even after repair to your existing one.

*I know nothing about cars though, repairing your current one may be just as safe to transport your dc in.

I have an old car and the exhaust fell off one day. It was an easy fix though, and didn’t cost much to replace. I would draw the line at the engine. The car must have a lot of rust or corrosion for the engine to fall out.

Assuming the problem is just engine mounts and the rest of it is sound is repair it.

At least you know what's wrong with the current car and you could buy a new to you one with a load of problems that you don't know about that are also expensive to fix.

Note: we (me and DH) run lots of older cars

My uncle lost his gearbox on the M56. Shock

Swap the car, you will lose confidence in it.
