Cerelle - continuous or with break

ajandjjmum · 26/06/2021 10:15

A friend has just begun taking Cerelle again - the main reason is to stop her periods being so heavy and painful.

Taking a break between each pack, she is finding that she is having two weeks where her emotions are all over the place - firstly the week of the break, and secondly when she re-starts the pill.

Anyone got any experience of taking Cerelle continuously, as she is thinking (probably correctly) that her hormones having to continually adjust isn't helping.

She does have PCOS, although that is very well controlled with metformin.

Thank you for any thoughts.

There shouldn't be any breaks with cerelle. It's a mini pill and supposed to be taken every day with no breaks

Cerelle is meant to be taken continuously! It's a progestogen only pill not a combined pill. She needs to do a pregnancy test.

Although thats if she's taking it for contraception I suppose. Was she advised to keep taking breaks?

Agree with pp cerelle is a mini pill and absolutely should not have a break between packs!

Yes it’s a progesterone only pill so no breaks! Also needs to be taken at the same time every day ideally. Did she not read the information leaflet? Otherwise she’ll have weeks where it’s not giving her any cover in terms of contraception.
When I took it I reached the point where I had only minimal breakthrough bleeding once a month.

I took cerazette for a few years (same hormone as cerelle) and it stopped my periods. You do need to take it at the same time every single day though (there is a 12 hour window to take it but try and be consistent)

Yes I take Cerelle, there shouldn't be any breaks. Was she advised to take breaks?

Bagelsandbrie · 26/06/2021 10:29

As others said she shouldn’t be having any breaks at all with the mini pill!!

ajandjjmum · 26/06/2021 12:16

Fortunately she is not currently using it for contraception! She was told by the consultant that she could take breaks or not - he wasn't worried as the purpose was to reduce heavy periods and pain. Obviously taking it continually is good not bad - thank you all for this.

No breaks with Cerelle,Cerazette or Dedogestrel (all mini pills)

BeagleMomma · 26/06/2021 13:03

She should also be prepared to have them stop altogether!
I went in it for the same reason and haven't had a period since.
