I have not got the hang of being a grown up.

I have laundry backed up, a messy house, the garden has turned into a jungle past few weeks, car started making a horrible noise yesterday. I need a hair cut today and didn't get around to making an appointment but will now be trying to get car fixed anyway (hoping it doesn't cost much).
Would like to go back to bed and pull duvet over my head!!!!

I'm not sure if any of us ever truly get the hang of it. I think we're all just muddling through and hoping no one notices that we don’t know what we're doing!

Don't be too hard on yourself, OP. Just tackle one task at a time and soon it will be under control.

If it helps, I've got a basket of clean washing I haven't bothered putting away for days now for no reason other than I cba.

Temp023 · 26/06/2021 07:56

It depends, if you live alone, are unemployed and in sound MH then you probably need to up your game. Otherwise these are extenuating circumstances at which you are presumably adulting fine, the stuff you list will get done in due course.

Idratherdrinkcoffee · 26/06/2021 08:04

My mental health is good, have children and work.

I know this is probably true, sometimes it feels like everyone else is more organised. I feel a bit too much like a character from Motherland this week.

We all do, thats why its on series 3 Grin

couchparsnip · 26/06/2021 08:36

I'm no good at adulting either. I have a huge pile of washing from when DD cleared her room out last week. And I can't do it because the 4 washing baskets are full of clean washing I've not put away yet.
My garden is also looking jungly. I tell people it's because I care for the environment and am cultivating a wild garden for the sake of the local wildlife. It's mainly because I keep looking at it and don't know where to start!

Slothbynameandnature · 26/06/2021 08:38

It's just so boring.

IdblowJonSnow · 26/06/2021 08:39

Same OP! It's just life! Very high maintenance time of year gardening wise!

NoSquirrels · 26/06/2021 08:40

@Slothbynameandnature

It's just so boring.
It really, really is.
Piggypiggyoinkoink · 26/06/2021 08:41

One of my friends gave me a badge that says carefully disguised as a responsible adult, it sums me up. A friend is coming for coffee tomorrow, which means I will be spending today trying to make the garden respectable. God help me if she wants to come into the house!

Thelnebriati · 26/06/2021 08:43

haiku about being an adult;

I am so tired.
Where's my money gone?
My back is hurting.

ProfessorInkling · 26/06/2021 08:43

Snap. I’m in bed eating toast instead of adulting for now. I highly recommend.

Idratherdrinkcoffee · 26/06/2021 08:52

I feel like I could tackle house or garden but both feels impossible. My car is also stinky so I probably need to go somewhere hoover and wash it before I take it to a garage/find a garage.

It is boring isn't it!

I have just sorted laundry. Wondering whether to run dishwasher or washing machine first.

@Piggypiggyoinkoink you probably need a clear route to the bathroom?!

This.

I have to strip my son's bed from where his nappy leaked overnight, do a mountain of washing up, and generally try to make the house look presentable before friends come over mid afternoon, but we've been awake since 5am (due to the damp bed) and I'm exhausted so just sitting on the sofa reading mumsnet. I also said I'd make scones and lasagne so I'd better get my act together. I'm trying not to think about the jungle/garden yet!

ProfessorInkling · 26/06/2021 08:56

Washing machine first as clothes need time to hang and dry, so dishwasher can go on after.

I need to clean my bathroom. And my car. And do the garden. And mop the floors. Meal plan. Order groceries. Fold laundry. Spend quality time with children.

romdowa · 26/06/2021 08:58

I dont think many people really have the hang of it! I'm mid 30s but still feel 16 in my head and often wonder when the proper grown ups will turn up to sort shit out 🤣🤣🤣

NoSquirrels · 26/06/2021 09:02

Blimey. You’re winning already. The extent of my adulting so far this morning is listen to DC2 feed the animals downstairs and think great, I can stay here in bed a bit longer...

NoSquirrels · 26/06/2021 09:02

But why can’t you do dishwasher and washing machine on at the same time? Confused

I an useless at food shopping, I hate it! I have to do quite a lot for ingredients for my business and then forget to buy actual food for us to eat! It is a source of great amusement to my friends...luckily I live round three corner from a big sainsbury's so treat it like a corner shop and pop in most days.

My garden, I'm planting loads of wildflowers in the borders with the intention of never weeding them so I only have to cut a small patch of grass!

Life is too short to worry, it doesn't matter to anyone if my clothes come straight out the clean washing basket rather than my wardrobe, or if I hide lots of crap in the utility room!

Babdoc · 26/06/2021 09:05

NoSquirrels they perhaps share a drain outlet hose.

Thecomfortador · 26/06/2021 09:06

I feel you. It's disheartening when you've really tried to keep on top of something like laundry for a few days, and then look round and see it's made so little difference to anything as the rest of the house and garden has exploded. I don't know how people keep clean tidy houses with small children. Maybe they don't.

NoSquirrels · 26/06/2021 09:06

Some people do though, don’t they? Some people seem to have all this shit down naturally - organised home, meal plans and schedules and all paperwork completed and filed, confident at DIY and practical tasks, know a host of tradespeople for those jobs they’re not going to tackle themselves, off out to a fun healthy outdoor activity early doors etc etc.

Exhausting.

Idratherdrinkcoffee · 26/06/2021 09:07

Oh at @Custardslice3 we do set high standards at times...pizzas and salad!!

Spend quality time with children. Of course! Grin

@NoSquirrels it doesn't seem to work out I run both at same time. Nothing looks clean. Is that unusual? Maybe I'm imagining it.

Ah!

See, Babdoc, adult-y type knowledge I don’t have! Grin

WeatherwaxOn · 26/06/2021 09:12

I have very low standards around housework, which I find helpful.
If people are coming over and the place is a tip, I focus on the main area they'll be in. All other messy rooms have the door shut.
Garden is deliberately overgrown but people who know me know that. Mow around the edges to make it look deliberate if you must.
