WWYD - started new job but offered other interviews

I'm very inexperienced in job hunting so hoping for some advice.

I was really struggling in my previous company so started job hunting around January. Applied for over 30 jobs and only heard back from about 5 but never got further than first interview.

One of the companies that rejected me then came back with a similar role and I had a very quick interview process and was offered the role.

I was so relieved to leave my old job - I started this week and it's been fine so far - lots to learn and no major red flags but I know it will probably take a few months to settle in and figure out if I’ll enjoy it.

Anyway I know it’s a nice problem to have but 2 companies that I’d applied to have now come back asking me to interview for other roles and I’m really not sure what to do.

Would you just tell them you’ve accepted another role?

Or would you go for the interviews anyway and see what happens (and not tell them about the new job)?

I’m in the IT industry in Ireland which is a relatively small market where everyone eventually knows everyone else, so it could possibly damage my reputation if I got an offer and left this job so quickly.

But I guess after the job hunting was such an ordeal I’m excited about the idea of not feeling desperate and having some options - although I’m not thrilled about the idea of interviewing again.

WWYD? or how would you weigh it up?

Did you compromise when you took the job you are in? Are the other two jobs more what you were looking for?

frazzledasarock · 26/06/2021 08:48

If you risk looking bad I wouldn’t do it.

But if nobody was to know I’d go ahead with the other interviews and see if those jobs are a better fit/pay.

What would be the benefits of taking a job with the other companies if they offered them?

DarcyLewis · 26/06/2021 08:51

Are the interviews for significantly better jobs?

SamMil · 26/06/2021 08:54

It depends what the other jobs are. If it's a more interesting role/more money/flexible/closer to home etc, then I'd go for it. If they're similar to your new job, I probably wouldn't run the risk especially in a small industry.

Personally I wouldn't go for the interviews. If you get a job and leave quickly you'll look unreliable and feel obliged to stick with the next job you take even if you hate it.
Plus, if you don't get it the company you work for will know that you're looking elsewhere and that could do early damage to your relationship with them.
Give yourself a change to settle in and do the job properly before you try to move on again.

Why are they coming back to you after their initial rejection? Do you think that reflects negatively on their hiring processes or understanding of the skillset required for the position? Really think hard about the implications of all this. The hiring process is when a company should be at their best, in order to attract the best talent. If they can't even get that bit right....

Thanks everyone sorry I didn't reply yesterday. You've given me lots of food for thought and on balance I think I won't pursue them.

In terms of benefits etc they're all pretty similar. However the roles are all v different and would take my career in different directions with different pluses and minuses which has made it harder to weigh up.

However, thinking about it, the role I'm in now probably has the best in terms of transferable skills. Also I think there's a strong chance - even if I got one of the other jobs - that someone would know someone. In my new job in just a week I've already had 3 separate connections to my old company. Also it's true that I'm a bit 🤨 about the other 2 companies approaching me now.

I need to give my head a wobble don't I. Instead of I feeling sorry for myself that this didn't happen a month ago 🙄 I need to appreciate that I've got something with potential ☺️. Thanks again Thanks
