Where to stay near Stevenage/Cambridge?

OH has an interview next month, planning to tag along and make a weekend of it. Looking for somewhere nice to spend a few nights, a bit different, not too expensive, more couply than family friendly as we'll be kid-free. Travelling from Newcastle but have done London to death so looking Herts/Cambs borders.

Any ideas?

Cambridge! It’s gorgeous and lots to do. There is a YHA near the station that has double rooms that’ll be a lot cheaper than the central city hotels. www.yha.org.uk/hostel/yha-cambridge

Cambridge is a billion miles better than Stevenage!!!

Stevenage and Cambridge could not be more different
Definitely find somewhere as close to Cambridge and as far away from Stevenage as possible..

Depending on your budget and dates, this is supposed to be very nice: www.downhall.co.uk/. It would be up to an hour from Stevenage or Cambridge (just outside Bishops Stortford). My friend has stayed here and raved about it.

Otherwise, I would go for Cambridge, or somewhere in the countryside. Saffron Walden is nice for a wander.
