I couldn't name just one as there are so many great songs so I have five, in no particular order:

The Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson And The Miracles
If I Were A Carpenter - The Four Tops
I'm Still Waiting - Diana Ross
The Onion Song - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder

If I were forced to choose just one of these five, I think I'd settle for The Tears Of A Clown. It took three years for it to be a UK hit. Motown's finest hour.

Ooh tough choice... I’d have to go “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough”.

Get ready also by the temptations
Heard it through the grapevine Marvin Gaye

Great thread. I've been listening to a lot of old soul recently. Motown must be the record label with the most great songs ever!

My favourite song is Heard it through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye; runner up is Reach Out I'll Be there - Four Tops.

So many more I could mention!

This Old Heart of Mine by The Isley Brothers

It was on a mix-tape that my dad used to play in the car when we were kids.

LittleDidSheKnow · 23/06/2021 16:16

Damn! I forgot about The Isley Brothers! Love them.

This Old Heart of Mine - Isley Brothers

Build Me Up Buttercup - Foundations

Waspie · 23/06/2021 16:30

I love "This old heart of mine" by the Isley Brothers too. And also the Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell tracks already mentioned - "You're all I need to get by" is my personal favourite.

"Build me up buttercup" is always played at rugby matches for some reason and so I associate it with rugby rather than Motown Grin

I love Stevie Wonder - Uptight, Signed Sealed Delivered and Fingertips spring to mind.

I love Motown. I play it in the car and sing loudly. It always cheers me up.

YouLookSoCool · 23/06/2021 16:37

This Old Heart of Mine, definitely.

WildRosie · 23/06/2021 16:44

This wasn't by design but none of the five I chose are Holland/Dozier/Holland songs.

LittleDidSheKnow · 23/06/2021 16:48

Build me Up Buttercup by the Foundations isn't actually Motown, but it's an awesome song, so it's still nice to see it mentioned! Wink

TheDogsMother · 23/06/2021 16:52

Frank Wilson, Do I love you, indeed I do
Jackie Wilson, Your love keeps lifting me.
Stevie Wonder, Signed, Sealed (had this at our wedding last year)
I love Motown so my list could be potentially endless

timetobackout · 23/06/2021 16:54

Papa was a rolling stone ,long version with the amazing intro - Temptations

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/06/2021 16:54

Definitely "Walk away Renee" - so concise and nobody else could deliver it like that.

Usernameisgone · 23/06/2021 16:55
