Readers digest condensed books

This is a very long shot, but I would like to re-read a book I read as a child. We had a large collection of readers digest condensed books in our house when I was a kid and I read them all from around age 10 onwards. One story has stuck with me as I thought it was really clever, but I can't remember what it was called.
It was a mystery where a painting was found somewhere and there was a sort of puzzle hidden in the painting and there was a man and a woman, i think, who were trying to solve this mystery which would lead to treasure (maybe). Does anyone know of any story like that? Tia

Is seem to remember sth from my childhood (my parents collected this series), but it was a riddle poem not a painting. The book was by Madleine Brent,

'By the Pricking of my Thumbs' by Agatha Christie

Not treasure, though, the solving of a murder

It's not the Da Vinci Code is it?

Sounds like the Da Vinci Code.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus Madeleine Brent – a voice from the past. I remember reading a lot of her books decades ago, and might have to revisit them.

I just looked her up on Fantastic Fiction, and she was actually a man, write the Modesty Blaise books.

Bloody hell, I read and re-read 2 Madeline Brent Reafrs Digest books when I was a young un. One where she was an orphan in a Chinese orphanage and another when she was on the stage doing slapstick comedy. There's a blast from the past

Just had a look and the puzzle one was Moonrakers Bride

Not the da Vinci code and not Madeline Brent- thanks for trying.
A picture of the painting (quite detailed and I remember trying to work out the clues myself) was actually included in the story and I remember something about a church.
