Can anyone recommend lovely places to eat in North Norfolk? (extra points for dog friendly!)

We are very much looking forward to a couple of weeks in North Norfolk in July. It'll be a combination of me, DD12, DS9, DH (when he's not working), DDog, my DM and DF on various days.

We are staying in Burnham Market. We know the area well but until this year we have rarely eaten out. Any recommendations for lovely places to eat as a family, picnic spots and dog friendly places would be great. I also thought about taking DH for a special dinner at Morston Hall if we can get booked, but other suggestions for somewhere gorgeous would be great.

Many thanks (now keeping my fingers crossed no bubbled burst in the next three weeks....)

@Labradabradorable enjoy! Love Norfolk!

onemouseplace · 23/06/2021 16:53

Glad I read this OP - we're in Burnham Market for the last week of August and it hadn't even occurred to me to think about booking anywhere yet!

We like The Duck Inn (Stanhoe), The Hoste, The Victoria in Holkham for lunch, The White Horse, The Globe in Wells. We've not tried The Anchor in Morston, so will add that to the list.

I wasn't that impressed by Number 29 - I remember it being a bit of a hassle with 3 DC (similar ages to yours).

Loved Morston Hall when we went there, we had the tasting menu and it was very good indeed.

Heyha · 23/06/2021 16:58

Definitely the Globe and the Victoria for dog-friendly, the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorp (I think?) was nice too although not very much room inside. We've been to various places in NN over the years with the dog but these are the only three that I can remember 😂 obviously fish and chips on a bench at Wells too!

Blessex · 23/06/2021 17:25

@onemouseplace book book book. Now!

Blessex · 23/06/2021 17:26

Ps the anchor in morston is good. But you can also get a great lobster at the Red Lion in Stiffkey.

daysofpearlyspencer · 23/06/2021 17:33

Second Dunn Cow in Salthouse, but book, its a really pleasant room for dog owners, you must book.
Plattens fish and chips in Wells if you sit at the table by the door though they are currently take away only.

onemouseplace · 23/06/2021 17:34

@Blessex I shall be consulting with DH and doing just that this evening!

DiscontentedWoman · 23/06/2021 17:40

No. 10 restaurant in Sheringham is really, really good ☺️

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2021 17:43

Unless it's changed because of Covid you can't book the Dun Cow , it's always been turn up and see if there's space.

Omg I want their garlic bread now, it's INCREDIBLE.

And if you like seafood there's Cookies 2 mins up the road, we get lobsters from there.

Now I want lobster.....

Heyha · 23/06/2021 17:57

What's Cookies like @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ? Still haven't ever made it and it gets such odd reviews it intrigues me. I don't really like much seafood but crab and lobster are an exception so I would like to get there one day!

Labradabradorable · 23/06/2021 18:20

Heyha we've often had a seafood platter at Cookies and have never had a problem. It's not chichi like some of the other seafood places (you get Heinz Mayo, and Hovis brown bread) which I think surprises some people!

Despite being a Norfolk girl, we live in Essex, and nowhere will ever beat The Company Shed on Mersea Island.

Thornham deli (if it’s still open) is lovely for lunch, lots of outside seating and good for dogs, really nice food.
I just love the walk from Thornham old harbour out to the beach, across the meadows with cow in, it’s such a magical place.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/06/2021 18:27

We were in North Norfolk recently (none of the places mentioned above) and were turned away a couple of times due to staff shortages (Brexit?), service was slow elsewhere for the same reason.

daysofpearlyspencer · 23/06/2021 18:48

Cookies had a staff shortage when we tried to get in a few weeks ago so they are not open everyday. Oh, i whished i lived in North Norfolk!

Blessex · 23/06/2021 18:54

Cookies at salthouse! It’s basic but then the best seafood is!

Heinz and hovis sounds great to me! Maybe we'll get there next year 🤞

Cookies is great! It is all white plastic furniture, salad garnish, and completely confusing, but the seafood is ace. The owners completely refuse to join in the gentrification of N Norfolk, and I love them for it. It hasn't changed since I was a little girl. Salthouse is also a great place for picnics, either on the beach, or up on the heath. The church often has really interesting art exhibitions on too, plus the kids can go graffiti hunting on the pews.

I'm not sure if it's dog-friendly (I'd imagine it is), but The Pigs at Edgefield is fantastically family friendly, and the food is divine. Roman Camp Inn near Aylmerton/Felbrigg is quite nice, and they have a huge garden which my DC used to love playing in.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 23/06/2021 20:57

The Pigs is definitely dog friendly - I've just checked! They even have a menu of dog snacks Grin

chloworm · 23/06/2021 21:03

Carpenter's Arms in Wighton

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2021 21:54

@Heyha

It's a shack basically with plastic chairs but omg the lobster is gooooooood! We tend to buy it and take it back to the cottage usually.

Confuseddotmum · 25/06/2021 14:28

I'm going to suggest some options further along the coast. Rocky Bottoms in West Runton is lovely and a beautiful setting overlooking the sea. Take nets and go rock-pooling at the beach there. I don't think they are taking bookings this summer, so you can just turn up and hope for a table. They do takeaway crab etc, so you can get some food for a beach picnic.

No.1 in Cromer for fish and chips - takeaway or sit in. Owned by Galton Blackiston from Morston Hall.

And don't forget a trip into Norwich if you have time/inclination. Some fab places to eat along St Benedict's Street - Haggle, Benedicts, The Bicycle Shop...

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 25/06/2021 15:10

This is a handy local website for places to eat out: www.enjoynorthnorfolk.com/ (I know the woman who runs it, she's lovely, so I trust her suggestions).

www.naturalsurroundings.info/ is a really, really lovely place that you can easily spend hours at, and they are dog-friendly. It's in the middle of nowhere, and I've never found it overcrowded, even in August. They have a cafe, but they also have picnic spots all over the place too, and it feels totally unspoilt and very much home-made.

salbodoodlecat · 06/07/2021 13:06

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. Booked a couple of places thanks to this

nicknamehelp · 06/07/2021 13:23

If you like sea food The White Horse at Brancaster has a pop up Seafood restaurant which does platters to share.
Ship at Weyborne dog friendly
Burnham Deep Dale Cafe (doesn't look anything as in a non assuming building at side of petrol station ) but is dog friendly and does amazing food.
Places in North Norfolk are getting booked up so really do need to book at least a week in advance.

Labradabradorable · 06/07/2021 13:49

Thanks to everyone who posted ideas on this thread.

We have booked some lovely looking spots, and I can't wait to try them out.

I would second the suggestion that anyone holidaying up there needs to get booked in advance. Our kids are younger, so we've booked 6pm slots, but several popular places had nothing later, as they were already booked up.
