Had a very strange phone call last night

Dh and I were asleep last night when the home phone rang at 1am. Dh picked it up, it was a young girl around age 9-10. Dh said she sounded frightened/upset.

She said 'who is that?' Dh was half asleep and didn't want to give out his name so he just said 'you called me' at which point she put the phone down.

The number was withheld. I phoned 101 today and told them what happened, not sure what they'll do if anything. But I hate to think a child was in trouble and was calling a random number for help....?

A 9 or 10 year old would call 999.

Nobody of any age starts dialling random numbers for help. It was probably a wrong number.

Child has just dialled the wrong number

I hope it was a wrong number. It was odd that a young child would be on the phone at 1am.

Don't you have to enter a code BEFORE you ring a number in order to withold your number?
Would someone do that if they were in some sort of difficulty?

RaspberryCoulis · 22/06/2021 17:07

Or it wasn't in fact a young children. SOme people on the phone sound a lot older/younger than they are.

You can have your line set up so that your number is always withheld. My DCs school used to and our local hospital does (incredibly annoying).

Maybe a girl a bit older than she sounded doing a prank call dare by a sibling and shitting themselves or maybe "sounding" scared on purpose to wind up the prankee? The fact that they withheld the number screams prank call.

I agree that a 9 or 10 year old in trouble would call 999 or 911 (dependant on how much American telly they've watched) ;P

NinnyNooNoo · 22/06/2021 17:14

How did your DH deduce that she was 9/10 just from her saying ‘who is that’? She may have been a teen/young adult with a young sounding voice?

Thank you, maybe I over reacted, but it was probably nothing untoward.
