Which fictional character gets on your nerves

For me it's that woman in the vest top who spits her coffee out all over twitter

@KurtWilde yes to Twlight charters. I read the books but that was a chore hated them so never bothered with the films.

I just couldn’t care about Bella just wanted her to die to get it over with and no Edwards was not caring he was a controlling creepy weirdo.

ChickenNugget11 · 22/06/2021 06:42

Temperance Brennan, in the books. Started off liking her but after a few into the series her constant getting caught by the bad guys is tiresome.
1-get a better cell phone
2-tell people where you're going
3-stop pretending you're a cop and chasing after people. You're not!

vampirethriller · 22/06/2021 06:43

Sookie Stackhouse in True Blood. The book Sookie is better, slightly.
Everyone in Frasier except Martin and Eddie. Especially anyone with an "English" accent.

I agree with many of these:

Mariannne Dashwood
Amy March (obviously Laurie should have married Jo)
Angel St Clare
Mr Poppy (dd loves the Nativity films but he makes me too angry and stressed to enjoy them)
OT God
Amelia Sedley (mainly because she spends so long worshipping her useless dead husband and ignoring poor Dobbin)

Disagree with:

Tess - she was very young when groomed by Alec who took advantage of his social status and was then treated appallingly by Angel. She didn't have the support she would have needed to stand up to the horrible men in her life.

Fanny Price - she seems unbearable to modern eyes but the standards she tries to live by were the accepted ones of the day. As a poor dependant relative, it took a huge strength of character to condemn the amateur theatricals and to refuse a financially advantageous marriage offer which everyone around her said she should accept.

Emma Woodhouse - agree that she's insufferable for much of the book but she was intended to be dislikeable. She becomes much more self-aware and is quite likeable by the end. She is also very patient and loving with her tiresome father.

Also hate Mrs Doubtfire (in the film; I haven't read the book). Mum is trying to hold down a career while also parenting her children responsibly. She gets rid of him because he's a useless man child so he stalks the family and we're supposed to feel sorry for him and like him.

Very mixed feelings about Rochester. He's very attractive, loves his dog, takes responsibility for Adele and was tricked into the first marriage. But I don't like the way that he gaslights Jane. Pretending that he is planning on marrying Blanche is cruel and the dressing up as a gypsy bit is weird.

Carrie from Homeland. Only watched 3 or 4 seasons but got fed up of the constant 'don't do that Carrie, it will cause big problems' and then her ploughing on ahead regardless of how risky and stupid her idea was - lo and behold it caused big problems. Every. Single. Episode. Had to stop watching because it made me so irate!
Completely agree. Though I don’t know whether it’s the behaviour of the character or the melodramatically overwrought gurning by Claire Danes that annoys me more.
ChrissyPlummer · 22/06/2021 07:06

Rachel in Friends - never worked, did a bit of a stint as a waitress then got a job in fashion; despite her only qualification being liking to go shopping. And the on/off with Ross. Ugh.

Cleo in the ‘Roy Grace’ series by Peter James. Not one flaw, not one. Boring, bland, one-dimensional character, looks like a model but works as a mortuary assistant 🙄.

Mrs Moon in Frasier - dreadful character, overacted by Millicent Moon and how was the character allowed to stay and work in the US? Daphnes family would have been better left unseen as they were all frankly, dreadful.

@MangoSeason

God in the Bible. He really is an unsufferable narcissistic abuser. Violent, emotionally abusive, needy, sexually abusive (yes, Mary said yes, but is was hardly from a position of equals was it?) Wiping out whole cities of people, including newborn babies because they didn’t worship him enough. Wtf is that? Constantly setting up traps for his victims to prove their loyalty to him. I mean, he is just dreadful. Butt hurt all the time if he is not getting enough attention. Jesus was a lot more decent but still not great. Telling the woman he saved form stoning to “sin no more”. Well, she wasn’t sinning- she was feeding her family the only way she could. The Bible will always be the greatest work of literature though.
You're not wrong, though as the greatest work of literature the proviso has to be that it is the King James Version.
CurryLover55 · 22/06/2021 07:14

Another vote for Carrie in Four Weddings & A Funeral. “ Is it raining? I hadn’t noticed” etc etc. Love the film though.

echt · 22/06/2021 07:16

Marmee of Little Women.

Sanctimonious prick.

Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 07:18

@Anordinarymum

Alan Partridge. Not funny Bloody Debbie Dingle Can't act. Hermione Grainger. Know all. Fizz from Coronation Street. Such wooden acting Rebecca Front in anything. Cannot stand her Leigh Francis.. tacky little man
Leigh Francis is not a fictional character, that's his real name and he's a real person. Grin
MargaretThursday · 22/06/2021 07:21

Sophie from the Dick King Smith books.
Nasty bully who uses other children if they have something she wants.
Worse, it's presented as a "isn't she such a determined little love" type way as though it's something children should aspire to.

Maskless · 22/06/2021 07:32

Kim in EastEnders. It just isn't feasible that someone like that could exist IRL.

Sparklingbrook · 22/06/2021 07:33

I don't think you could meet a more annoying couple than Marianne and Connell in Normal People.

FangsForTheMemory · 22/06/2021 07:34

Both Gilmore Girls. Manipulative and selfish.

LaTomatina · 22/06/2021 07:41

SheepGoBaaaa thank you! Brilliant synopsis of Jane Eyre!!! I haven't read it in years but hated it as a teenager but never took the time to figure out why. You hit the nail on the head.

Plenty of the above, plus cousin Helen (What Katy Did) and Isabel Archer (Portrait of a Lady).

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 22/06/2021 07:45

Most people in The Archers & Julia from Motherland. She's so fucking annoying I want to slap her.

lavenderandwisteria · 22/06/2021 07:47

Poor Rachel (from Girl on a Train) surely Anna is the really horrible one from that book? Although that bloody flat mate of Rachel’s (Cathy?) was awful.

Geamhradh · 22/06/2021 07:49

I only watched one episode of Homeland and thought nope. I can't spend any longer with this woman.
Most of the film Harry Potter children but the podium goes to Ginny Weasley, with Cho Chang getting silver. Acting performances that are probably on those worst-ever lists, and if not, should be. Harry himself in bronze position for his "constipated toddler" face which he does when the director wants sad/angry/surprised/ecstatic. Screws his face up as though he's painfully trying to do a big poo.

Angel Clare was abhorrent.

Kay Scarpetta's niece Lucy.

Amy Pond- if in doubt, shout
Clara- if in doubt toss your hair and your little flippy skirt
Madame Vastra- one episode would have been one too many.
Missy- seems like a parody.

(I realise many of these are the fault of writers/directors rather than the people playing the character, but Ginny/Cho and Harry aren't using that excuse, oh no!)

Arbadacarba · 22/06/2021 07:49

Rose Red in the Katy series (reminded by pp's mention of Cousin Helen) - can't stand the smug, put on cuteness.

Cousin Helen's ex, Alex, is more annoying than Helen - marrying some poor sap called Emma while still obsessed with Helen, moving next door to Helen and calling their child Helen. How did Emma tolerate this?

northbacchus · 22/06/2021 07:55

Meredith Grey, self centred beyond belief.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 22/06/2021 07:58

Meredith Grey.

She's such a gurn.

Hah! northbacchus :o

I clearly agree. I actually snorted when she got kicked into the sea.
