Hanging coats in the downstairs loo

We’re getting a downstairs loo put in. There’s bugger all cupboard space in the house. How would you feel visiting a house where your coat was hung up 8. The downstairs loo.

I don't think I would say anything, but are you sure there is no alternative? We have a freestanding coat stand as we have no cupboards. It's not very classy looking, but it functions.

NeverMetANiceOne · 21/06/2021 22:04

Why would it be a problem? We've got loads of waterproofs etc hanging in the downstairs loo, it never occurred to me that anyone could find this offensive...

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/06/2021 22:05

I have stinky dog walking coats in the downstairs loo. Guests coats get chucked on the bench.

toptomatoes · 21/06/2021 22:07

We hang our coats in the downstairs loo but put guest coats on the stair post.

bathorshower · 21/06/2021 22:07

Hooks on the back of the front door, or along the wall next to it instead?

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 21/06/2021 22:08

I wouldn't hang my clothes up in a loo.

I consider myself to be moderately slatternly, not normally bothered by a bit of harmless muck, but no.

Ninkanink · 21/06/2021 22:09

I’d suggest a row of hooks on outside of loo door instead.

I wouldn’t personally have a huge issue but I think a fair few people would think it rather nasty.

Topseyt · 21/06/2021 22:09

I haven't much cupboard space. I use a freestanding coat and hat stand in the hall.

I wouldn't really want them stored in the downstairs toilet, even though estate agents still often refer to them as cloakrooms in their property descriptions.

Bryonyshcmyony · 21/06/2021 22:10

It wouldn't concern me at all. Unless people use them to wipe their bums, what's the issue?

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 21/06/2021 22:10

What about hooks on the outside of the loo door?

I sympathise. It really winds me up that English houses so often seem to be designed with nowhere at all to put coats and shoes.

aiwblam · 21/06/2021 22:10

You can also try to figure out a solution where all the coats aren't together - we also have a coat on the back of our study door (just the one coat there). They don't all need to be together if there isn't space.

AutoGroup · 21/06/2021 22:11

There must be a bit of wall space in the hall for some hooks?

ILs have a coat cupboard in their loo but still have hooks in the hall for guests' coats.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 21/06/2021 22:12

Everything in a toilet gets coated in aerosols from the flushing toilet. You can put the seat down, but other people who use the toilet probably won't. And outdoor coats don't get washed often.

LemonRoses · 21/06/2021 22:13

I wouldn’t hang coats in a lavatory, but would in the vestibule if it were spacious enough for a hanging rail or cupboard.

MaybeCrazy2 · 21/06/2021 22:14

No I wouldn’t like that at all. I’m not the most hygienist person ever but that would turn my stomach.

SantiagoSky · 21/06/2021 22:18

We have hooks from IKEA that you can hang from the top of the door on the outside of the door. Inside is not hygienic and there is also not enough space.

Seesawmummadaw · 21/06/2021 22:21

I wouldn’t like that. Poo particles.

dappledsunshine · 21/06/2021 22:22

Poo particles 😳

dappledsunshine · 21/06/2021 22:22

X post Seesaw 🤣

Stigofthedump40 · 21/06/2021 22:25

No from me.. people obviously have no idea how much poop particles can travel in one flush

Marcanana · 21/06/2021 22:26

It's called a "cloakroom" for a reason guys.... it's where you hang your cloaks.
Just put the seat down before you flush the loo.
You store your toothbrush in the bathroom for gods sake, and I assume that has a loo in it too?

pinkmagnolias · 21/06/2021 22:30

I wouldn't do it unless there is enough room for a cupboard that you can hang the coats inside?

A good idea (that I wish I had done) is buy a small wardrobe/locker for inside the front door instead of the drawer unit I have which is pretty useless for storage!

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 21/06/2021 22:30

I don't store my toothbrush in the loo that guests usually use, no. I might put the seat down, but I don't trust other people to do so.

Sally872 · 21/06/2021 22:33

For my parents or siblings popping in coats go on the bannister or back of a kitchen chair.

If a larger group then usually we put them upstairs on a bed then bring them down when people are leaving. Hadn't occurred to me until now that might be weird 🤔
